This detached one-and-one-half story single-family residence has a rectangular sidehall plan with a three-bay arched front porch of wrought iron and a shed- roofed carport-garage of modern materials. The flush facade is asymmetrical and consists of an offset front entrance with 6/6 double-hung and fixed windows. There is a picture window front of the house. The frame construction is finished in shingles on the top story and drop siding of wood on the first story. It rests on a coursed rubble stone and concrete foundation. The gambrel -gable combination roof is covered with blue asphalt shingles and features returning eaves and a brick chimney with metal cap. The axis of the roof is perpendicular to the street. i HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Justify how the persons,important events,and/or historical patterns associated with the structure/site nd surrounding area lend the property significance. This residence was built for Kate Calvi-n, a faculty member at Montana State College in music from 1894 to 1904. This structure qualifies as a contributing element within a potential historic district due to its association with the residential aspect of the Civic Phase of Bozeman 's historic/architectural development. Grand Revision 1985 Unique in the city as a modest pattern book house with a column-supported, arcaded, recessed front porch, this house appears to have been based ' generally upon a House Design No. 1037" in Hodgson's turn of the century mail-order house pattern catalog. The house has undergone two major alterations - the additions of modern picture windows in the first floor, and a garage and car port on the north side - though the high overall architectural quality of the house is nevertheless very apparent. Miss Kate Calvin built both this house and the one next to it, 613-615 S. Grand on what was one large lot. Calvin taught music at Montana State College from 1894 to 1904.
