MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 2 Architectural Description Property Name: 411 W. Main Street Site Number: 258 ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Other (specify) If Other, specify: Mid-Century Modern Property Type: Commerce Specific Property Type: Confectioner Architect: Unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: Unknown Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: Montana Cadastral records online, accessed 09/07/2020 This site consists of a small single-story commercial building built in the Mid-Century Modern style as a sandwich and burger shop in 1969, and operated as a 4B's Junior Restaurant. This small casual eatery was positioned at an angle to a separate larger 4B's family restaurant. Constructed of concrete block, the building has a concrete foundation and square plan shape. The roof is sloped, higher on the south and has a projecting boxed cornice clad in diagonal wood siding. The exterior walls are covered in a variety of materials: the south-facing primary facade has an irregular-cut-stone veneer, the west elevation is almost entirely metal framed windows, and the north and east elevations are painted concrete block. The primary entry is located on the north end of the west elevation, with an at-grade, side-hung glass door. To the south, spanning the rest of the west elevation, are fixed-lite display windows with vinyl paneling below. These banked display windows continue around the building's southwest corner onto the west end of the primary facade. The facade faces south onto W. Main St., and has a second at-grade entry with a transom above. No openings were visible on north and east elevations. The site is in excellent condition. It appears to retain all aspects of integrity. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 411 W. Main Street Site Number: 258 HISTORY OF PROPERTY The property at 411 W. Main Street was built in 1969 as a commercial building, and operated as sandwich style shop called "4B's Junior". The proximity to a high school made this a profitable use of a location close to the larger family restaurant in the 4B's chain. Prior to the building of the small structure, an older one-story wood-framed residence had occupied the location since before 1889. The 4Bs Junior restaurant opened in the commercial building on this property in 1969 and operated at this location until late in the 1970s. The restaurant specialized in roast beef sandwiches, milk shakes, soft drinks, other sandwiches, and hamburgers (R. L. Polk, 1970; Gallatin County Tribune, 1971). In 1978, Hiawatha Travel Services was operating from the building (R. L. Polk, 1978-2004). In 2004, Hiawatha Travel Services and Recompute Computer Service both occupied the commercial spaces. Between 2005 and 2011 the site was solely occupied by Recompute. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 4 Information Sources/Bibliography Property Name: 411 W. Main Street Site Number: 258 NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES NRHP Listing Date: NRHP Eligibility: Yes No Individually Contributing to Historic District Noncontributing to Historic District NRHP Criteria: A B C D Area of Significance: Period of Significance: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The site is a small commercial building formerly the “4B’s Junior” restaurant. It was constructed in 1969 in a Mid-Century Modern style. It has not been previously recorded but is in excellent condition and retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. Sect. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NPHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria. It has been determined to lack individual significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D. It is not currently located within a historic district. However, it is located less than two blocks west of the 1986 NRHP-listed Main Street Historic District (24GA952). If the boundary of this district were expanded and/or the period of significance for the district extended past 1937, this site retains sufficient integrity that it would be contributing. Therefore, Metcalf recommends this stie currently eligible/contributing to a potential historic district. Metcalf recommends further research regarding the potential for an expansion of the Main Street Historic District to determine site significance. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 6 Integrity Property Name: 411 W.
