(MMI) delineated a roadside ditch for wetlands and waterways. This roadside ditch is located on the south side of East Baxter Road north of the Northwest Crossing Subdivision. The delineation resulted in the identification of 0.457 acre of emergent wetland. This data serves as an addendum to the Northwest Crossing Subdivision Wetland Delineation Report (MMI 2018/2020). 1 INTRODUCTION Morrison-Maierle, Inc. (Morrison-Maierle) completed a wetland delineation for the roadside ditch located on the south side of East Baxter Road, north of the Northwest Crossing Subdivision. This technical memo summarizes the findings of the wetland investigation. The wetland investigation was completed on June 22, 2020. This data serves as an addendum to the Northwest Crossing Subdivision Wetland Delineation Report (MMI 2018/2020). The project is located at approximately latitude 45.700096°, longitude -111.110549°. Appendix A the location of the delineated feature on the updated Preliminary Plan map for the Northwest Crossing Subdivision. 2 METHODS The wetland investigation utilized the methodology presented in the 1987 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE)Wetlands Delineation Manual (Environmental Laboratory 1987) and subsequent modifications outlined in the Regional Supplement to the Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineation Manual: Western Mountains, Valleys, and Coast Region (Version 2.0)(Environmental Laboratory 2010). Data points (DP) were established as needed during the field visit. Sample data points were labeled with a DP, followed by the number associated with the data point, (e.g. noted here in bold (DP 1) to correspond to the sample points for that location. Data for vegetation, hydrology, and soils were recorded in the field and entered on Wetland Determination Data Forms located in Appendix B. Photographs of all sample points are provided in Appendix C. Sample points and wetland boundaries (if present) were recorded by a professional land surveyor. Locations were then converted to shapefiles uploaded to AutoCAD for display on the Preliminary Plat Map for the Northwest Crossing Subdivision located in Appendix A. 2.1 Vegetation Vegetation at upland and wetland data points was classified based on wetland indicator status. The indicator status of vegetation was derived from the Montana 2018 State Wetland Plant List (Lichvar et al. 2018). Using the current plant list, vegetation cover qualified as hydrophytic where over 50% of the dominant plant species had an indicator status of obligate (OBL), facultative wet (FACW), and/or facultative (FAC). FAC plants, such as Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense), are equally likely to occur in wetlands and non-wetlands. Vegetation cover was considered as upland where over 50% of the dominant plant species were classified as upland (UPL), and/or facultative upland (FACU). Plants observed within each data plot were identified using Montana Manual of Vascular Plants (Lesica 2012). Vegetation nomenclature follows Lichvar et al. (2018) and Lesica (2012). 2.2 Soil Wetlands must meet the qualifications of at least one hydric soil indicator, or meet the definition of a hydric soil (a soil that formed under conditions of saturation, flooding or ponding long enough during the growing season to develop anaerobic conditions in the upper part (NRCS 2019a)). Soils at each data point were evaluated and described notating the depth, matrix color, mottle abundance and contrast (if present), texture, etc. (Environmental Laboratory, 1987 and 2010). Moist matrix color and moist mottle color of the soils were determined utilizing the Munsell Soil Color Chart (Kollmorgan Instruments Corporation, 2009). 2.3 Hydrology Primary and secondary hydrologic indicators were assessed at each wetland and upland data point; one primary indicator or two secondary indicators are required to qualify the area as containing wetland hydrology. Examples of primary hydrology indicators are saturation within 12 inches of the ground surface, surface water, and water table within 12 inches of the ground surface. Examples of secondary hydrology indicators are FAC-neutral test and geomorphic position on the landscape. 3 RESULTS A wetland delineation of the project area was performed by Morrison-Maierle environmental scientists on June 22, 2020. The vegetation, hydrology, and soil characteristics at each of four data points were documented in the field and recorded on Wetland Determination Data Forms for the Western Mountains, Valleys, and Coast Region (Supplement, 2010). One wetland was identified within the ditch bottom. 3.1 Vegetation Vegetation communities were evaluated and documented to delineate wetland and upland boundaries. The project area consisted of a previous right-of-way cleared of trees and shrubs for a water main, a perennial stream, and forested communities on either side of the right-of-way. The upland areas within the roadside ditch were dominated by field horsetail (Equisetum arvense, FAC), smooth brome (Bromus inermis, UPL), sticky willy (Galium aparine, FACU), Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense, FAC) and common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale, FACU). The vegetation in the wetland ditch bottom consisted of cattail (Typha latifolia, OBL) and meadow foxtail (Alopecurus pratensis, FACW). The location of all data points are identified on the figure provided in Appendix A. 3.2 Soil Mapped soil types within the project area were obtained from the Web Soil Survey (NRCS 2020). Five mapped soil type was identified in the project area: x Amsterdam silt loam, 0 to 4 percent slopes (53B) x Quagle-Brodyk silt loams, 4 to 8 percent slopes (451C) x Enbar loam, 0 to 4 percent slopes (509B) x Meadowcreek loam, 0 to 4 percent slopes (510B) x Lamoose silt loam, 0 to 2 percent slopes (537A) Soils were analyzed in the field for texture and color using the Munsell Soil Color Charts (Munsell 2009). It should be noted that the investigation area is a roadside ditch and soils have likely been excavated and original soil conditions have been altered. Soils within the wetland area exhibited an one-inch layer of road mix and then 8 inches of 10YR 2/1 clay loam with 10YR 4/2 intermixed. Below eight inches, the soil was gravel/rock. It is believed that the soil within the wetland area meets the characteristics of Redox Dark Surface (F6), but investigator was unable to dig deep enough due to gravel confining layer. Soil was saturated at the surface and surface water was present within most of the wetland area. Soil within the upland areas consisted of a 10YR 3/2 clay loam matrix with intermixed organics and roots. 3.3 Hydrology 3.3.1 Topography The roadside ditch does not appear on regional USGS topographic maps. 3.3.2 National Wetland Inventory The US Fish and Wildlife Service maintains the National Wetlands Inventory (NWI), which serves as a publicly available resource that provides detailed information on the abundance, characteristics, and distribution of US Wetlands. The NWI database does not indicate an aquatic feature at the investigation area. 3.3.3 Local Hydrology The ditch receives water from both Baxter Ditch and Baxter Creek. Some of the flow from these waterways enters culverts on the north side of the ditch and continues to flow below East Baxter Road. Some of the water sits in the ditch and eventually seeps in to the ground. The roadside ditch ends at the east end of the subdivision boundary. The ditch does not maintain year-round flow and the channel is completely vegetated. This ditch is classified as a wetland and not a waterway due to the vegetated nature of the channel.
