BELDEN MM# 2089 . 020 010 0310 TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION Summary Stormwater Sewer Water Streets Soil Erosion and Storm Water Management Stormwater Calculations Tributary Area Map (folded) INTRODUCTION The purpose of this report is to provide the basis for the design of stormwater, sanitary sewer and water systems, as well as streets, sidewalks and curb and gutter for Phase I of Bridger Creek Subdivision. This project is a Planned Unit Development, the first phase being 68 . 95 acres consisting of 44 single family lots, 12 multifamily lots, 3 commercial lots and 2 Industrial lots . SUMMARY Stormwater System Stormwater run-off from the site will be directed either ,,- a detention pond located on the west end of the site or to a more centrally located drainage swale/irrigation pond system. Run-off from the easterly section of the development will be directed grassy swales and by curb and gutter to stormwater inlets which in turn will discharge to a drainage ditch that crosses the property. Drainage for the remainder of the development will be directed along curb and gutter to stormwater inlets which in turn will discharge to grassy swales at the edge of the golf course and to a detention pond on the west boundary of the site . Sewer Main Extension The proposed sanitary sewer for Phase I will connect to a manhole in the newly constructed extension of the City of Bozeman sewer located at the west edge of the proposed subdivision. Two branches will extend from this manhole along the centerline of ridger Creek Drive . The northern branch will be an 8-inch [SDR 351 main which will extend to within 520 feet of Story Mill Road. The southern branch will be a 10-inch SDR 35 PVC main which will extend to within 240 feet of Story Mill Road where a future extension to the areas east of Story Mill Road could be possible . An 8-inch main will extend along Eagle Drive to serve the R-3 residential development in the southeast corner of the project with an additional 8-inch main extending along Birdie Drive serving the B-1 commercial development in the southern portion of the project . For specific design criteria please refer to the attached Sewer Service Area Study, January, 1994 . Water Main Extension The water main extension will connect to an existing 12-inch water 2 main at the intersection of Story Mill Road and Bridger Canyon Road. From this connection, a 10-inch line will extend north along Story Mill Road approximately 1, 800 feet . Approximately 1, 200 feet west of Story Mill Road an 8-inch main extension will connect to the existing 12-inch water main in Bridger Canyon Drive. This main will extend north through Phase 1 following the proposed streets . Six inch extensions along Bridger Creek Drive will connect the proposed 8-inch and 10-inch mains providing a looped system. A future 8-inch extension will run from Bridger Creek Drive northward across Bridger Creek and then along McIlhattan Road to a point near Phase 2 of the project initially serving the golf course clubhouse . Design Requirements - Design flows will include estimated domestic commercial and fire flows for all phases of the development . Domestic flows were estimated in the following manner: Use per living unit : 2 . 5 persons per unit x 150 gpd per person = 375 gpd Estimated number of living units : R-3 = 8 living units per acre (72 acres x 8 living units = 576 units) R-1 = 44 units Total living units = 620 Total domestic demand = 620 living units x 375 gpd = 232 , 500 gpd Commercial usage was estimated at 1, 500 gpd per acre : 1, 500 gpd/acre x 12 . 8 acres = 19, 200 gpd Total estimated demand = 251, 700 gpd or 175 gpm A peaking factor of 2 is used to estimate peak flows for the subdivision. (2 x 175 gpm = 350 gpm peak demand) Estimated fire flow is 1, 000 gpm for 2 hours . Total flow used for design is 1, 000 gpm + 350 gpm = 1, 350 gpm Available Head - The City of Bozeman pressure contour maps indicate the total available pressure head is 130 psi. A residual pressure of 20 psi under fire flow conditions is required by State of 3 Montana Standards, therefore, the available pressure head is : 130 psi - 20psi = 110 psi or 254 ft . Head Loss - The required pipe material is ductile iron pipe with Hazen-Williams friction coefficient C=120 . The head losses were determined using an iterative process . No adjustment in equivalent length due to fittings, values, etc . , were made. It is suggested that the conservative C-factor takes into account these minor losses . A head loss of 71 feet can be expected, which is less than the allowable 254 feet . Therefore, the proposed system is satisfactory. Streets , Sidewalks, Curb and Gutter Access to Phase 1 of the project from Bridger Canyon Road will be located approximately 1, 200 feet west of Story Mill Road. This access, Birdie Drive, will extend northward to intersect with the proposed Bridger Creek Drive . Two other points of access are located north of Bridger Canyon Road. These accesses are the proposed Bridger Creek Drive which will loop through Phase 1 beginning and ending at Story Mill Road. An additional street internal to Phase 1 will be Eagle Drive, which will extend from Bridger Canyon Road to the R-3 development in the southeast corner of the project, and terminate in a cul-de-sac . Design Requirements - Subbase sections for each street will consist of 3 inches of 1-1/2-inch minus crushed gravel on 6 inches of 3- inch minus pit run gravel . Base sections for each street will consist of 3 inches of 1-inch crushed gravel . Surface section for each street will consist of 3 inches of Asphalt Concrete. Typical street sections shall be 37 feet in width from back-of-curb to back-of-curb with a 331 wide paved section. Upon total buildout of the subdivision, sidewalks will have been constructed in the following locations : Sidewalks will extend along the northside of the south leg of Bridger Creek Drive from Story Mill Road to the east boundary of Lot 40 . Sidewalks will also extend along the southside of the north leg of Bridger Creek Drive from Story Mill Road to the east boundary of Lot 34 . Additional sidewalks will extend along the east side of Birdie Drive from the south boundary Lot 55 to Bridger Canyon Road. Design Requirements - Base section for the sidewalks shall be 2 inches of 1-inch crushed gravel . 4 Surface section for the sidewalks will be 4-inches of Class M-4000 concrete . Sidewalks will be 5 feet in width and located 5-1/2 feet from the back of the curb. Curb and gutter will extend along each side of the proposed streets with driveway approaches located in the appropriate location for each lot . These approaches will be constructed by the homeowner' s contractor. Design Requirements - Subbase section for the curb and gutter shall consist of 3 inches of 1-1/2-inch minus crushed gravel on 6 inches of 3-inch minus pit run gravel . Surface section of the curb and gutter will be Class M-4000 concrete formed as required by the City of Bozeman Standards. d:\2089\design.rpt 5 SOIL EROSION AND STORM WATER MANAGEMENT To prevent soils erosion at the site, Best Management Practices (BMP) as outlined in the Montana Sediment and Erosion control manual shall be employed. Expected soils disturbing activities shall include : stripping of top soil, excavation for utilities, construction of building foundations, driveways, and streets, and preparation for planting and seeding. Construction practices employed to prevent erosion shall include : restricting construction equipment and traffic to the immediate construction area, temporarily seeding or covering denuded areas and stockpiles within 14 days of last construction activity in the area and stockpiling top soil such that side slopes do not exceed 2 : 1 . Prior to the beginning of construction, straw bale barriers shall be placed at strategic locations within the 40-foot wide drainage easement and upstream and downstream of the detention pond at the west end of the site (See Grading and Drainage Plan) . Permanent measures to control erosion shall include seeding of all disturbed areas and the control of storm water runoff . All temporary and permanent erosion and sediment control practices shall be implemented from the start of the project and maintained and repaired as needed to assure continued performance of their intended function. Storm water on the site will be directed to storm drains and drainage ditches via curb and gutter, grassy swales, landscaping and topography. Storm water from the eastern one third of the site will discharge to a drainage ditch which crosses the site from southeast to northwest . This ditch will provide 6, 300 cubic feet of storm water retention behind one foot beams to be constructed in the ditch as detailed on the Grading and Drainage Plan. Much of the remainder of the site will discharge to a detention pond, volume 25, 240 cubic feet minimum, to be constructed at the west edge of the site. The site is divided into fourteen areas with storm water calculations for each area provided in the appendix. A brief description of each area and method of directing storm water is given in the following paragraphs . Page lof 3 Area One This area includes Lots 43 through 52, Eagle Drive and a portion of Bridger Creek Drive. Storm water runoff for this area will be directed to storm drains on Eagle Drive and discharge through a 15- inch diameter RCP pipe to the underground system within Area 6 . Area Two This area includes residential Lot 29 and commercial Lots 41 and 42 , a portion of the golf course and a portion of Bridger Creek Drive . Storm water runoff will be directed to the drainage ditch separating the easterly one-third of the project from the balance of the site . Area Three This area includes a portion of Bridger Creek Drive . Flow is directed to the irrigation ditch feeding the irrigation/detention ponds . Area Four This area includes Lots 1 through 3 , 26 and 27 and Bridger Creek Drive tributary to these lots . Storm water will be directed to the drainage ditch which crosses the site from southeast to northwest . Area Five This area includes lot 56 and a portion of Lots 57 and 58 . Stormwaters shall be directed to an underground storm drain system beginning at the north edge of the area. Area Six This area includes Lots 35 through 40 and 53 through 55 and that portion of Bridger Creek Drive and Birdie Drive tributory to the area. Runoff shall be collected at the west end of the area by an underground collection system. Area Seven This area includes Lots 31 and through 34 and 59 through 61 and a portion of Bridger Creek Drive which extends along these lots . Runoff shall be directed to the west end of the acres where it will enter an underground collection system. Page 2of 3 Area Eight This area includes a portion of Lot 30 and a portion of Bridger Creek Drive . Area 8 is tributory to an underground storm drain collection system. Area Nine This area includes residential Lot 62 and most of commercial Lots 57 and 58 . Storm water runoff will be directed to a drainage swale to be constructed through this area. Runoff from Area 5-8 is collected by an underground storm drain collection system and transported to a point immediately downstream of area 9 where the combined runoff from Areas 5-9 is conveyed to the detention pond via a grassy swale . Area Ten This area includes portions of single family Lots 13 , 14 and 15, a portion of Lot 30 and that portion of the golf course which lies west of the 40-foot drainage easement . Storm water runoff will be directed to a 15-inch RCP culvert which will direct flows to the west side of Bridger Creek Drive. Area Eleven This area includes Lots 4 through 7, Lots 21 through 25 and a portion of Bridger Creek Drive. Storm water runoff will be directed to storm drains located on Bridger Creek Drive near Lots 7 and 21 . Area Twelve This area includes Lots 8 through 11, a portion of Lot 15 and Lots 16 through 20 and that portion of Bridger Creek Drive fronting these lots . Storm water runoff will be directed to storm drains located on Bridger Creek Drive near the southwest corner of Lot 11 . The combined runoff from Areas 11 and 12 is conveyed via an underground conduit to a grassy swale which runs through the golf course in a grassy swale . Area Thirteen This area includes Lot 12 . Storm water from this area will be directed by drainage swales onto that portion of the golf course lying to the west of Lot 12 . Page 3of 3 Area Fourteen This area includes a portion of the westerly park site upon which the detention pond shall be constructed. Areas 1 and 5-8 shall drain to a central storm water collection system that empties into an open channel at a point common to the downstream discharge of Area 9 . This runoff shall be combined with the runoff from Area 10 , 11 and 12 immediately upstream of the detention pond. The runoff from Areas 10, 11 and 12 shall be conveyed to the detention pond via a combination of closed conduits, open channels, and culverts . Topo map showing the location of the proposed swale and approximate fills. 2. Calculations showing carrying capacities of the proposed grassy swale and culvert crossings of the access roads. 3. Portion of panel 300028 0008 B (3-15-82) showing the limits of FEMA Zone B which are also indicated on the topo map. Rex Easton proposes constructing a parabolic grassy channel-swale D along the west side of the abandoned railroad grade to carry Zone B flood waters. Agricultural operations over the years have resulted in the substantial filling in of the former channels east and west of the railroad grade creating the necessity of such a channel. The work will encompass creating a 16501± long channel beginning at a point to the south where the abandoned railroad grade was breached in the past to drain floodwaters from the low areas to the east and ending at the settling pond on the north. Minor filling of localized low areas will occur at the points indicated on the blueline print. Other improvements will include the installation of appropriately sized culvert crossings of the roadways and the construction of 11± high dikes across the swale at 2001 intervals to retard the flow of normal runoff. Retention of normal runoff within the swale will reduce the sediment- pollutant load and total quantity of normal runoff reaching the golf course ponds and Bridger Creek. In closing, it should be again noted that past agricultural activities have changed the drainage pattern/capacity along the abandoned railroad grade and have indeed altered the configura- tion of the floodplain. This project will restore the carrying WATER•WASTEWATER•TRANSPORTATION•AIRPORTS•STRUCTURES•WATER RESOURCES•PHOTOGRAMMETRY•CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING capacity of this "flood" corridor while at the same time blending with the proposed golf course and future homesites.
