(Morrison-Maierle) completed a wetland delineation of Lots 5, 6, and 7 of Gallatin Center in Bozeman, Montana. This technical memo summarizes the findings of the 2019 wetland investigation. The wetland investigation was completed on May 30, 2019. The delineation area comprised three lots within the Gallatin Center Subdivision in North Bozeman. The legal location of the three lots, according to the Montana Cadastral website are as follows: • GALLATIN CENTER SUB PUD PH 1, S35, T01 S, R05 E, Lot 5, ACRES 1.97 • GALLATIN CENTER SUB PUD PH 1, S35, T01 S, R05 E, Lot 6, ACRES 0.76 • GALLATIN CENTER SUB PUD PH 1, S35, T01 S, R05 E, Lot 7, ACRES 2.26 Appendix A, Figure 1 identifies the location of the project. The entirety of lots 5, 6 and 7 were delineated for wetlands and waterways. 2 Methods The wetland investigation utilized the methodology presented in the 1987 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Wetlands Delineation Manual (Environmental Laboratory 1987) and subsequent modifications outlined in the Regional Supplement to the Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineation Manual: Western Mountains, Valleys and Coast Plains Region (Version 2.0) (Environmental Laboratory 2010). 2.1 Wetlands Upland and wetland data points were established during the field visit. For wetlands and non- wetlands identified, wetland and upland plot data for vegetation, hydrology, and soils were recorded in the field onto Wetland Determination Forms, and are provided in Appendix B. The wetland identification numbers, (e.g. noted here in bold (W-1-18) correspond to the sample points (sp-1-18 wet) for that location. Photographs of all sample points and wetlands are provided in Appendix C. The sample points and wetland boundaries were recorded by a professional land surveyor and post-processed to sub-meter accuracy. Locations were downloaded into ArcMap 10.6.1 and used to create project maps. 2.1.1 Vegetation Vegetation at upland and wetland data points was classified based on wetland indicator status. The indicator status of vegetation was derived from the 2016 National Wetland Plant List (Lichvar et al. 2016). 2.1.2 Hydrology Primary and secondary hydrologic indicators were assessed at each wetland and upland data point; one primary indicator or two secondary indicators are required to qualify the area as containing wetland hydrology. Examples of primary hydrology indicators are saturation within 12 inches of the ground surface, surface water, and water table within 12 inches of the ground Gallatin Center Lots 5, 6, and Wetland Delineation Page 3 surface. Examples of secondary hydrology indicators are FAC-neutral test and geomorphic position on the landscape. 2.1.3 Soils Soil types within the project area were obtained from the Web Soil Survey (NRCS 2019a) and analyzed in the field for texture and color using the Munsell Soil Color Charts (Munsell 2009). Wetlands must meet the qualifications of at least one hydric soil indicator, or meet the definition of a hydric soil (a soil that formed under conditions of saturation, flooding or ponding long enough during the growing season to develop anaerobic conditions in the upper part (NRCS 2018b)). The NRCS mapped soil types within the project area are: Blackdog silt loam, 0 to 4 percent slopes (50B) and Turner loam, 0 to 4 percent slopes (57B). (NRCS 2019a) (Appendix A, Figure 3). 2.1.4 Floodplains The project area is located within a mapped area of Gallatin County, map number 30031C0804D with an effective date of September 2, 2011. The project area lies entirely in an area classified as Zone X, area of minimal flood hazard. 2.1.5 National Wetland Inventory The US Fish and Wildlife Service maintains the National Wetlands Inventory (NWI), which serves as a publicly available resource that provides detailed information on the abundance, characteristics, and distribution of US Wetlands. According to the NWI database, a palustrine emergent temporarily flooded feature exists within the subject property. Appendix A, Figure 4 depicts the NWI features in the project vicinity. 2.1.6 Topography The project area lies within the Bozeman, MT (USGS, 2016), U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) 7.5-minute Topographic Map. East Catron Creek is depicted on the subject property. (Appendix A, Figures 1 and 4). Google Earth aerial photography indicates that East Catron Creek was moved from its original location between the years 1995 and 2003. 3 Results A wetland delineation of the project area was performed on May 30, 2019. One wetland and one waterway were delineated within the investigation area. Wetland fringe exists along portions of the boundary of East Catron Creek in areas that would be considered a “floodplain”. As mentioned above, East Catron Creek was moved from its original location between 1995 and 2003 so hydrology could be considered “problematic”. Photographs of the investigation areas and wetlands are provided in Appendix C. 3.1 Wetlands One palustrine emergent wetland (WL-1-19) was delineated within the project area, totaling 0.10 acre. The wetland fringe is located in areas of lower elevation, near the water’s edge. Vegetation present within the wetland areas consisted of reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea, FACW), fringed willowherb (Epilobium ciliatum, FACW), stinging nettle (Urtica dioica, FAC) and Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense, FAC). Soil within the wetland exhibited a silty clay loam 10YR 2/1. A Gallatin Center Lots 5, 6, and Wetland Delineation Page 4 strong hydrogen sulfide odor was present in the pit, qualifying the soil as hydric under “Hydrogen Sulfide” (A4). The soil was saturated and a water table was encountered at 6 inches. The wetland/upland boundary is distinguished largely by a change in topography and, to some extent, plant community. The adjacent upland areas were dominated by Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis, FAC), common tansy (Tanacetum vulgare, no designation), common dandelion (Taraxacum officinale, FACU), woods rose (Rosa woodsii, FACU) and Canada thistle. Soil within upland areas exhibited a clay loam 10 YR 3/2 and 10 YR 5/2 (dark greyish brown). No hydrology was observed in the upland area. Table 1. Delineated Wetlands within the Investigation Area 3.2 Waterways The ordinary high watermark (OHW) of East Catron Creek was delineated in the area. Approximately 800 feet of OHW was delineated at this site.
