Mayoral Proclamation Recognizing
Peace Officer Memorial Day and Police Week
WHEREAS, every day, peace officers face the threat of violence and danger. They routinely put their lives on the line to defend ours, and the price of that bravery may result in injury, disability,
or death; and
WHEREAS, these men and women sustain peace and order in Bozeman, Gallatin County, throughout the state of Montana, and across the United States; and
WHEREAS, we look to them as models of courage and integrity; and
WHEREAS, we rely on law enforcement officers to keep our neighborhoods safe, enforce our laws, and respond in times of crisis; and WHEREAS, by a joint resolution approved on October 1, 1962, the President has been
authorized and requested to designate May 15 of each year as "Peace Officers Memorial Day" and the week in which it falls as "Police Week;" and WHEREAS, on May 15 the Bozeman Police Department will participate in a virtual statewide
memorial service hosted by the Gallatin County Sheriff to honor officers lost in the line of duty;
and WHEREAS, tragically in October 2019 Gallatin County Deputy Sheriff Jake Allmendinger was killed in the line of duty in service to his community.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Chris Mehl, Mayor of the City of Bozeman, do hereby proclaim May 15th as Peace Officer’s Memorial Day and May 10 through May 16 as Police Week.
We take this day and week to honor their service and sacrifice and we remember the fallen heroes whose selfless acts have left behind safer and stronger communities.
