HomeMy WebLinkAboutHistory of the Bozeman Police Dept_Chapter 07 ' Chanter 7 ' Dav Book & Blotter ' In the basement of City Hall in a secured area are reports and other papers related to the Bozeman Police Department. Needless to say, most are covered by a thick layer of dust. I was able to locate journal type books that captained the daily activities of the ' Police Department . The earliest that I found was dated 1925. 1 found each quite interesting and several of the entries somewhat humorous. ' As I read many of the entries, I felt myself going back in time as I know what it is like to be a law enforcement officer. In order to respond to the "emergency call", the ' officer would have to summons a taxi cab in order to get where he needed to be in a timely manner. It was also quite interesting to learn that Police Officers of yesterday were bound by many of the same legal standards that today's officer must adhere to. The mode of transportation for yesterday's officer was "foot Patrol". Numerous entries were made where an officer would find unsecured property and contract the ' business owner. Officers were so familiar with their beat they knew things were okay just by the looking at the store interior. Examples of this would be certain lights on or the position of the cash register drawer. I will take you back to November 10, 1925. I have not changed the spelling nor the grammar of entries from the Blotter and Day Book. In some cases, I omitted either ' the first or last name for the privacy of individuals involved and their relatives. Try to imagine you as being the Police Officer an duty during that time period. What type of training was required? What were the educational requirements? What standards were ' used for recruitment and hiring? I can assure you that it is nothing like what is required of today's officer. ' November 10 1925 8:30 m: A call to the Montana. Hotel. They had a hucker in there. That they did not want her there.
