Chapter 4
Postin of Cit Ordinances
The Bozeman City Council was quite busy as the structure of city government had
to be put in place. In order to accommodate some of this structure, additional duties
were placed on the Police Department.
Ordinance Na. 2
Concerning the posting and publishing of the ordinances of the City of Bozeman
Be it ordained by the City Council of the City of Bozeman
Section 1: That the City Clerk, within five days after passage of any Ordinance by the
City Council, shall make out and deliver to the City Marshall three copies of said
Ordinance.
Section 2: The Marshall forthwith, upon receipt of said copies post the same at the
following places; at the door of the City Hall, at the Courthouse, and at McAdow's Mill.
' Section 3: Immediately after posting said copies, the said Marshall shall certify to the
Clerk the date of the posting of said ordinances specifying the same by its number and
title.
Section 4: The Clerk shall preserve the certificate so returned by the Marshall, and from
the date specified in such certificate of the posting thereof, said Ordinance shall be
deemed to have been published, and the provision thereof shall take effect.
Section 5: And all Ordinances passed by the City Council shall be published in at least
two newspapers in said City, within ten days after their passage; provided that
reasonable terms can be made with the publishers of said newspapers.

It is unknown where this City Hall was located. However, the first City Hall was
located an the southeast comer of Main and Bozeman streets. In the summer and fall of
' 1867, W.J. Beall, W.K. Tracy and H.H. Mood built a two story frame building, with each
owning one-third interest in the land and building. It was erected far a "City Hall" and
was used as such and the total cost is believed to be around $4144.00.

On 4ctobe , 1868, this building was sold to the fine of Willson and Rich. Mr.
' Rich made the upper floor as his family residence and the first floor was used as a stare
by the firm of Willson and Rich.
The Courthouse was located at Main and Fourth, and McAdow's Mill was located
on the east side of North Broadway between Davis and Fridley. This site is now
occupied by Simkin Hallin lumber company.
The first newspaper established in Gallatin County was the "Montana Pick and
Plow" and it appeared in December 1869. The newspaper was later sold and the new
' paper appeared as the "Avant Courier an September 13, 1871.
Another newspaper, "The Bozeman Times", began publishing in 1874 and this
paper later merged with the Avant Courier. The Bozeman Chronicle began publishing in
January 1883.
