Commission Memorandum
Report To: Honorable Mayor and City Commission
From: Lain Leoniak, Water Conservation Specialist
Craig Woolard, Director of Public Works
Subject: Montana Department of natural Resources and Conservation
Renewable Resource Grant Application for the Sunset Hills
Cemetery and Lindley Park Water Conservation Project
Meeting Date: May 23, 2016
Agenda Item Type: Consent Item
Recommendation: Authorize the City Manager, or his designee, to sign a Grant Resolution
Approving the City of Bozeman’s Application to the Montana Department of Natural Resources
and Conservation’s Renewable Resource Grant Program to support the Sunset Hills and Lindley
Park Water Conservation Project.
Background: The City of Bozeman seeks approval to submit an application for State funding to
support the Sunset Hills Cemetery and Lindley Park Water Conservation Project. This project
will conserve water, increase availability of domestic water supplies during periods of drought,
reduce safety risks to city staff associated with the diversion structure, and increase instream
flows for fish habitat. It also allows for the protection and efficient use of one of the City’s most
senior water rights.
The City is requesting $125,000.00 and, if awarded, the grant funds would facilitate the
completion of the Project within the next two years (Fall 2018). Estimated water savings realized
upon completion of the Project total 1,124.7 Acre Feet.1
Alternatives: As suggested by the Commission.
Fiscal Effects: The grant requires matching funds (including leveraged resources) which have
been provided for in the City’s Capital Improvement Plan for FY 16-18 and in-kind services.
