LINDLEY PROJECT
BSF MISSION
Inspiring a lifelong love of skiing, athletic
excellence, and personal growth
Through great ski programs
and grooming cross-country ski trails in the
Bozeman community.
Updates
• BSF has over 570 people participating in programs
• 1000s of people in the community enjoy the ski trails
each year
•2015 BSF awarded Gold Certification from USSA, the
highest honor
•17 ski clubs in the Nation (over 450 ski clubs) have
received Gold Certification.
•Reason for Gold: strong leadership, staff, coaches, ski
programs, the XC trails grooming program, and deep
roots in and support from the community.
Ski TRAILS
* BSF has been a leader in providing the Bozeman community with quality recreational ski opportunities since 1936
* Highly committed to working with partners, including The City of Bozeman, to provide the best possible XC ski trails to the Bozeman community.
* BSF grooms trails at 5 venues, grooming around 70 Km of ski trails for the community. Skiing is free; we encourage a donation to help pay for the grooming.
* 2014-15 hired Consultants to help us set a vision and plan for the future of XC skiing in Bozeman. Survey was conducted and results show highest priority for the community is in-town skiing at Lindley and Highland Glenn.
Discussion
Tonight we would like to talk to you about about some improvements to the ski trails, the Nordic grooming program, and year round community recreation at Lindley.
I.Upgrade Snowmaking and Lights
II.Add a paved recreational path around Lindley and softball complex
III.Explore safe connector between Lindley and Highland
History of Grooming & Snowmaking
Bozeman and at Lindley
•BSF Groomed trails in Bozeman for over 46 years
•BSF Groomed Lindley since 1969
•October, 2005 The City Commission approved a
request by BSF for permission to drill a well, make
snow for the ski trails at Lindley, and install lights
• (see 10/3/05 Minutes of Commission meeting).
•BSF has made snow off and on for years
•System is old, inefficient and needs upgrading
Upgrade to Snowmaking system
a)This summer consulted with HKD for proposal to upgrade snowmaking system
b)System involves laying pipes 4’-6’ feet underground -12,000 feet outer loop-3,600 feet inner loop.
c)Install # sub-surface snowmaking stations
d)Add a small water storage reserve for holding and cooling water; capacity of 32,585 gallons of water
Solar Lighting
To Provide Nighttime Skiing
•Install small solar operated lights around the trails.
•Lights are a visible application of renewable energy and provide night time nordic activities on the trials.
•Design details need to be worked out; type of solar lights, pole type, light spacing, power supply, etc.
•Other projects around N America
•The Nordic Group Solar Trail Lighting Project which illuminated 6.2 kilometers (3.84 miles) of Bogus Basin's Nordic Center cross-country trails with solar-powered lights.
•Many other projects in Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin.
Plan to build and fund snowmaking
and lights project
•Work with City to plan for installation
•BSF will plan and lead a capital campaign to
raise the funds needed: private donations,
grants, local support with In-kind donations of
labor
•Move quickly to begin the project
Paved Multi-Use Recreational Trail
•BSF has a high priority need for paved roller ski trails for BSF, MSU, and community Nordic skiers.
•We roller ski on County roads and in subdivisions, such as Triple Tree, Black Bull, and Summer Ridge. With the boom in population and traffic in Gallatin County, roller skiing is becoming increasingly tenuous and unsafe.
•BSF is looking for a home for paved roller ski trails.
•We would like to explore the possibility of these trails around the perimeter of Lindley.
•We envision broad multi-use recreational opportunity for the community on these paved trails.
Plan to build and fund paved
trail for recreation, roller skiing, walking, biking
Highland Ave: Safe Crossing
•BSF and other organizations see a need to
connect Lindley and Highland recreational
complexes
•Explore options with other leaders in
Bozeman; underpass, etc.
Lindley Project
* Thank you for the opportunity to talk with you
about our vision and plans
*We appreciate the opportunity to update you
on snowmaking/lights and to specifically ask for
support to proceed with projects and paved
trails and your help in considering connectivity
between Lindley and Highland
