Message: To the Bozeman City Commissioners: We were dismayed and bewildered to hear the
city recently dropped criminal charges against Brian Martin of 402 W. Koch St. who illegally
demolished his historic house. I agree with the Bozeman Chronicle editorial that you are setting a
dangerous precedent. Exacting the laughably small sum of $300 for such blatant disregard of
historic preservation and the surrounding community of neighbors only encourages it to be
repeated. It sends the message that city regulations are nearly meaningless, that city officials (the
commission and planning staff) are inattentive and unresponsive to citizens who raise concerns
and that callous behavior is rewarded. What, for example, is the resolution of the illegally
constructed and inhabited ADU? Please inform us what the tangible lessons of this episode are.
To Mayor Carson Taylor, please pen an op-ed in the newspaper so that all citizens know.
