Commission Memorandum
REPORT TO: Honorable Mayor and City Commission
FROM: Rich McLane, Deputy Chief of Police
Chris Kukulski, City Manager
SUBJECT: FFY15 Homeland Security Grant Award
MEETING DATE: January 11, 2016
AGENDA ITEM TYPE: Consent
RECOMMENDATION: Authorize Chris Kukulski to accept grant award from Montana Disaster and Emergency Services – Homeland Security for the amount of $55,000 for the
purchase of Portable 2-way radios.
BACKGROUND: In April 2015, The City of Bozeman submitted an application for a grant to
purchase ten (10) additional 2-way radios. Officers of the Bozeman Police Department use portable 2-way radios as one of their primary means of communication with each other, other agencies and 9-1-1 Dispatch. This communication serves to provide immediate response to local
emergencies of a small nature and larger emergencies that require interaction with other
agencies. Acquisition of these radios improves our overall effectiveness and enhances the safety
of our officers and community. On December 18, 2015, the City was formally advised this grant was approved for the total
amount requested. The award letter is dated “10/01/2015” but was not provided to the city until
December 29, 2015. Purchase decisions on these radios include coordination with Gallatin
County 9-1-1 to ensure these radios match the future direction of radio communications for full compatibility.
FISCAL EFFECTS: Approval of this proposal will have no adverse impacts on the current
Police Department budget. Matching funds are not required by the funding agency.
ALTERNATIVES: As suggested by the City Commission.
