Letter to the Editor:
For five years, with camera, sketchbook and paintbrushes in hand, I’ve been
studying the character of individual buildings that comprise our historic downtown.
How I’ve come to appreciate our city government for the aesthetic and historic
appearance of our downtown, even through economic lulls and unbridled growth. I write this letter as a plea for the city commission to put aside the
recommendations of the study which would overturn what has worked to keep
Bozeman the city we love, namely the NCOD, the neighborhood overlay district, adopted in 1991. I agree with Derek Strahn’s recent feature article in the Chronicle, in which he makes a good case for requesting that the city not undo
what has served all of us so well. If you wish to join the cause of historic
preservation, attend the City Commission meeting on Monday, December 14, or write to the commissioners and voice your opinion. Bozeman is growing by leaps and
bounds. There is no shortage of what’s shiny and new. Let’s keep this town
cherishing what’s historic by not diluting the NCOD for expediency’s sake but, as Strahn has written, “ to save the best of the past for future generations..”
