Dear Bozeman City Commissioners:
We are writing in response to a November 5th article in the Bozeman Chronicle which states the City
Commission will consider"a major overhaul of its historic preservation regulations on Monday, Dec.
14th. As owners of two properties in Bozeman's historic neighborhood,we are concerned with the
implications of undoing the NCOD.
When we purchased our properties in the'80, our neighborhood was on the verge of becoming a typical
run-down university district since we border MSU. But through hard work and with help from the city,
we now live in a stable, vibrant neighborhood which has undergone much rehabilitation in the last two
i
decades. People have been assured through the historic preservation efforts on the city's part to put
hard earned money and effort into their properties and it has been a successful revitalization. The
NCOD is not broken; it doesn't even need to be fixed. All one needs to do is walk through the south side
of Bozeman to see that it is now a very desirable neighborhood. It has taken years for this
transformation that we have seen happen around us. As citizens of Bozeman, we have played by the
rules and improved our properties. To undue the progress that has happened over the years to attempt
to create affordable housing is misdirected to say the least. Please do not remove the current
protections that are in place. The historic neighborhoods of Bozeman are envied by many around the
state and are crucial to the downtown core. Derek Strahn, our former historic preservation officer, j
eloquently voiced his concerns and we agree with him completely.
We are unable to attend the meeting on Monday, but hope this letter adequately conveys our dismay
over the recommendations that are before the commission.
Sincerely,
Mary Frost
