Edward Byrne JAG Commission Memorandum REPORT TO: Honorable Mayor and City Commission FROM: Steve Crawford, Police Chief Chris Kukulski, City Manager SUBJECT: Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant for Missouri River Drug Task Force MEETING DATE: December 7, 2015 AGENDA ITEM TYPE: Consent RECOMMENDATION: Approve sub-grantee acceptance of the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant in the amount of $99,928 and authorize the City Manager to sign the contract with Gallatin County allocating the use of those funds. BACKGROUND: On July 30, 2015, the Montana Board of Crime Control / US Department of Justice awarded Gallatin County $234,164.38 in federal funds to operate the Missouri River Drug Task Force (MRDTF). As a sub-grantee of the grant, there is a local match requirement of $29,679 for a total contract of $99,928.00. The Bozeman Police Department currently has two full time detectives assigned to MRDTF and has been a member since 1990. The mission of MRDTF is to provide a collaborative federal, state and local law enforcement effort to identify, target and address those involved in drug trafficking, manufacture and/or violence. MRDTF utilizes sophisticated long-term investigative approaches, including undercover surveillance operations, the purchase of evidence and information, and electronic surveillance to disrupt and dismantle targeted drug organizations. FISCAL EFFECTS: Approval of this proposal will have a fiscal impact of $29,679.00 and is within departmental budget. ALTERNATIVES: As suggested by the City Commission.
