Dec. meeting minutes : Approved
College Street separated pathway options.
The current plans for reconstruction of College St. call for a sidewalk on the north side. BABAB would
like to see a separated pathway (which is wider than a sidewalk) to accommodate cyclists and
pedestrians on the north side of College from roughly the Chronicle building to 19th. There are many
apartments and residential housing in this area and it is difficult for cyclists and pedestrians to cross
College to get to the south side pathway. The City of Bozeman Engineering Dept already sent a letter to
MDT requesting a wider pathway on the north side of College. BABAB will send a letter to MDT
supporting a wider pathway as well.
Action item: Sam will send a letter to MDT in support of pathway north side of College
Driver's Ed program/ Bicycle Rules: update
Nonnie found a bicycle education video and other materials from Illinois and from the League of
American Bicyclists. She has support from the Director of Adult Education, who manages the driver’s ed
classes in Bozeman to present for 40 minutes. Mike Anderson is the driver’s education teacher. The
classes are from 6‐8pm, so students are often tired and it will be important to engage students. BABAB
members will meet with Mike soon on details of bike presentation for drivers ed class in Feb or March.
Taylor, Jason, Nonnie and Rebecca will follow up.
Review League of American Bicyclists recommendations from Bike Friendly Community (BFC)
application. We reviewed recommendations and discussed how to follow up in 2013. Key items
discussed were:
City designate part of existing staff time or create a new position for bike/ pedestrian
coordinator. BABAB has been requested this since 2009 and has created a position description.
We discussed ideas for moving this forward such as engaging the new Public Works Director
and other City staff on the issue and agreed to distribute the League of American Bicyclists
(LAB) recommendations widely. Kirk already sent to GVBC list serve,
Some of LAB’s recommendations “low hanging fruit” that we discussed include:
Invite police to become BABAB member (we have one open position). Mark Johnson or Travis
Munter perhaps
Consider how ideas from Strong Towns site (land use/development issues) be of use
Bike ambassadors – call on local businesses and bike groups to do outreach activities throughout the
year (rather than just during bike week in May). Some ideas were:
o ask the Bozeman film festival to give a discount to those who bike and bring their helmets
(say $1 off admission).
o Set up a table at Bogert Farmers market and winter farmers market to distribute bike maps,
lights, safety info…
Action Item: Rebecca will send LAB recommendations to BABAB list serve, John V will send to City
budget group.
Action Item: Kirk will follow up with farmers market.
Main Street resurfacing status.
BABAB drafted letter to MDT, which has not yet been sent. Bill will send to John V. who will send letter
to MDT. Sam sent MDT an email request about the project – and is waiting to hear back. Subcommittee
has not met yet on this project.
Discuss 2013‐2014 BABAB budget request and process
BABAB needs to request specific projects in the upcoming budget. We reviewed the Feb 2012 memo
with BABAB’s bike lanes and bike boulevard requests. The top 3 projects from this for $84,000 have
already been approved by the Commission and are in the CIP, though not yet funded. We discussed the
next 3 priorities, which may be bike boulevards on Koch, Lamme and Wallace, which would consist of
installation of thermoplastic sharrow markings, signage and other bike friendly features. The City will
use NACTO and AASHTO guidelines for design of sharrows (placement/frequency per block etc).
Action Item: Rebecca put an action item for February agenda to prioritize our list for the 2013 budget
request.
Action Item: John will keep us posted on the date/time of the upcoming budget meeting where we can
request these projects get funded. Likely in late January.
BABAB Ning site/ Facebook
Sam will discontinue BABAB’s Ning site and we will continue to use Facebook as usual.
Review BABAB officer job descriptions and decide if they need revisions.
We eliminated the treasurer position (which is not required by bylaws anyway) and made minor
revisions to the secretary and information manager positions. Agreed to keep education and outreach
coordinators as subcommittees rather than officer positions. Discussed whether to continue with bike
benefits program and agreed that we would try it for another year and Jenna would lead.
Action Item: Jenna will get bike benefits info from Rebecca.
Action Item: Rebecca will update descriptions (check with Brian for bullet points on Outreach
coordinator, Nonnie will send Rebecca her bullet points on education coordinator).
