A. Call meeting to Order
B. Public Comment: 5 min
Tom gave an update on the bike education discussion group that has met a couple of times in past few
months. About half of attendees are BABAB members. The group was originally focused on education on
traffic rules/ mutual respect for people on bikes and motorists. Discussion is evolving. Some ideas from
last meeting were how a Vista volunteer might perform some duties of a bike/ped safety coordinator in
Bozeman. Vista costs about $10,000 per year. Bike Walk MT and Billings BikeNet both have Vista people
this year. The next meeting will be Wed. Jan 21 at Audrey’s Pizza Oven at 6:30. Anyone may attend and
enjoy pizza and beverages.
C. Approve November meeting minutes: 2 min
Tabled until Feb meeting.
D. City updates‐ Transportation Plan, Striping Plan: 2 min John
Transportation Plan RFP is out for bid. No updates on striping plan
E. Discuss updating bike maps for spring 2015: 5 min
The City is almost out of bike maps. Should we print more maps as is or try to incorporate changes since
2011? Alpha graphics is able to add lines to maps for minimal cost. The group decided to print more
maps this spring with minor changes. Review bike map‐ what lines are missing? Mark up maps and
come with changes next month. Potential map changes include:
Sharrows‐ (some bike routes have sharrows, Mendenhall has sharrows, but is not a bike route‐
how to show on map?), S. 23rd bike lane, path on Oak btwn 7th and Rouse .
Bike lanes are shown on map as going through intersections, though they drop off prior to
intersections in some places. How to show this on maps?
New projects coming soon: College shared use path (north side), Ferguson road, Cottonwood,
Path to M‐ (show on map w/ projected opening date?). North 19th pathway.
Is it possible to show difficult bike connections on map? We could look at bike maps from
places like Portland for ideas. Major map changes will require bids and a vote from board.
BABAB has $25,000 available through City Streets Maintenance funds that is used for on‐street bike
improvements. A portion may be used for printing maps.
F. Review 2014 goals/accomplishments and 2015 goals: 15 min
See attached notes on accomplishments.
Ideas for 2015 goals:
Education and Outreach: Have a BABAB presence at more events like Catapalooza, County fair and other
events.
Continue to work toward a “Gold” level bike friendly community (See attached League of American
Bicyclists report recommending Bozeman specific actions)
Iho‐ mentioned a potential fundraiser at her restaurant, maybe in March. Would need to check with city
and organize specifics of fund raiser – what is it? Put on Feb agenda to get ideas. Iho could donate food,
City advertise.
G. Bike Safety Outreach/Education– 30 min
Subcommittee on Safety Outreach/Education‐ Mike and Sam
Mike and Sam absent‐see Tom’s public comment above. Once bike education campaign/info is
developed, could advertise in office where you renew or get driver’s license. Show bike education
information on monitor that people see while waiting.
Engage more high school students in bike activities. Only 4 bike racks at high school. Could it be a stop
for bike week? Had a coffee truck there recently. Bike to school week in sept. – coordinate with MSU
or elementary bike to school events? Tony could arrange to bring mobile bike kitchen.
High School Drivers Education‐ Jen (no updates)
MSU Bike activities (no updates)
H. Bike Week 2015 – May 11‐15th planning– Jessie May 30 min
Change our process to encourage businesses to come to us. Each person take on 1 role to make bike
week happen.
1. Plan First Security bank window display for week of May 4th.
2. Plan Bangtail window display design
3. Coordinate commuter convoys – when they leave‐ organize safe route and who leads ride.
Compile list of clubs in community to lead convoys.
4. Plan food for bike week party. Find venue with a kitchen. Get details on Fairgrounds, Story
Mansion (Jen).
5. Plan bike week party
6. Write letter‐different levels of how businesses could be involved. Track with spreadsheet in
gmail account w/ businesses. Drop letters to businesses where we know people. Request
financial resources to purchase bike lights and other commuting gear, rather than gathering
random prizes. Nominal fee‐ like $25 per year. Ask businesses to give nominal discount during
bike month. Online application on website?
Levels of involvement may be offering various bike friendly items such as bike racks,
bike maps available, safe route to business… Could they donate a business member to
volunteer for bike to work week?
7. Organize commuter convoys, find people to lead who assist people with traffic rules, riding
properly.
8. Re‐organized commute challenge for a cause. Consider picking 5 nonprofits and have people
sign a numbered sheet, they tell us how many miles they are commuting. Funds go to Bike
Kitchen, HRDC….nonprofit of choise. Teams pledge where they want their bike mile pledges go
to.
9. Media coordinator needed – try newspaper, radio Outdoor Bozeman, Bozone, Chronicle, BABAB
websit‐ bikewalkbozeman.org,
10. Morning coffee stop coordinator. Keep it to 5 locations – coffee shops in different parts of town‐
consider Cold smoke‐ Oak, City Brew near Kohls, Sola, Rockford, Daily on Rouse. College St path
likely blocked due to construction during May bike week, impacting access to City Brew by bike.
