Active Transportation Study Abroad Netherlands and Germany Trip report – Rebecca – Board viewed a presentation on what she learned about the influence of planning, infrastructure and policy and how this can be applied to Montana. Key Points: 1) Lots of people bike in the Netherlands. 2) Cycling is very convenient, while driving is not. 3) Walking & biking transportation is a priority. In Montana: How can we work together with an intentional focused effort on the 5E’s: engineering, evaluation & planning, education, encouragement, and enforcement? We can suggest a goal of creating a policy such as capping miles that cars drive and further encourage the city to adopt the NACTO guides. G. Bicyclist fatality on Frontage Road The board discussed the effect of the media and police reporting and commentary, how we could effectively reply to the public, and how BABAB can affect change in terms of infrastructure, signage, and awareness. Mike Davis will draft a letter recommending changes that need to be made on Frontage Road and the importance of educating drivers more on cycling and the rules of the road. Frontage Road is a county road that is state maintained. The railroad is an issue and making the road more bike-friendly doesn’t seem to be a priority. I.
