Dear Bozeman City Commission,
It has recently come to my attention, that you are discussing the issue of MDT’s intent to raise the speed
limit on Frontage Road to perhaps as high as 60 MPH from its current 50 MPH. I would advocate to you
to keep it at the lower limit as I feel it has made it a safer road for all. I have taken care of folks that
ultimately died on that road and others with serious injury over the years. From an emergency room
standpoint as well as maintaining the hospital’s trauma registry, I can say that rates of injury and death
on that road have declined with the lower speed limit. I realize that traffic volumes have probably
dropped somewhat with the opening of the airport access road, but we were seeing less injuries on
Frontage prior to the opening of Airway Blvd. It remains a busy and narrow road with multiple private
accesses, and, honestly, a lot of distracted driving as well, from my observations. Please consider
keeping the existing 50 MPH as it does seem to have alleviated some of our safety issues with that
particular roadway.
Sincerely,
Sam Miller RN, CEN, CCRN
Bozeman Deaconess Trauma Coordinator.
