PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The City of Bozeman is currently in the process of developing an Urban Forest Management Plan to ensure the future of a healthy, beautiful urban forest. One important consideration of the plan is to implement new planting programs using a diverse selection of tree species. In order to raise community awareness, and to help educate Bozeman citizens on the importance of species diversification, along with proper tree planting and care for young trees, we are planning to implement the first phase in the development and beautification of Rose Park. Rose Park is our community's Frisbee Golf Course, and is located along one of our most high profile streets. There are very few trees on the 20 acre parcel to provide shade or aesthetics for people who are using the park, and our goal is to plan and begin the landscaping of the park to promote a healthy, diverse tree population, and a beautiful, shady place to enjoy a game of Frisbee Golf. To emphasize the importance of species diversification, we will be using nine tree species, a different one at each tee pad. Interpretive signs will be placed at the tee pads to encourage players to notice each different tree and read about its special characteristics and attributes. A large sign will be displayed at the beginning of the course to describe the project and educate the public about the care needed for young trees to survive, and the benefits trees provide. 30% of the grant award will be used to improve an existing irrigation system on the south end of the park, and new trees will be irrigated with refillable water bags until a permanent system is in operation. All tree maintenance will be done by City Forestry staff. 2. ARBOR DAY CELEBRATION: The Bozeman area has much to offer, especially for those that enjoy outdoor recreation. When citizens appreciate our natural resources, they are supportive of our efforts to plant and maintain a sustainable forest to benefit the community now and in the future. Our Arbor Day celebration will not only be a day for tree planting, but a day for people to realize the value of a healthy urban forest and that Bozeman is a place where we love our trees. The 2016 Arbor Day celebration in Bozeman will be held at Rose Park. Plans for the celebration will start off with an opening ceremony and introductions, children's activities, displays and educational presentations, music, and disc golf for everyone. All costs for the Arbor Day Celebration will be covered by the City of Bozeman Forestry Division and the Bozeman Tree Advisory Board. 3. PROJECT PERSONNEL: City of Bozeman Forestry Division staff will be installing all trees for the project, including the support stakes, strapping, mulch, and trunk protectors. Staff will write the grant application and implement the grant project. Forestry personnel, in cooperation with the Bozeman Tree Advisory Board will plan and conduct the celebration at Rose Park for the 2016 Arbor Day. A private contractor will be hired to redesign the irrigation system located at the south end of the park. Tree maintenance and additional irrigation will be provided by City Forestry staff. 4. PROJECT TIMELINE: Tree planting and interpretive sign installations will be completed by Arbor Day, April 29, 2016, unless the celebration is delayed due to weather conditions. The existing irrigation system on the south end of the property will be redesigned and improved to allow for the coverage of a larger area. Completion of the permanent system will not be done until later in the siring of 2016, and until that time, temporary water bags will be placed on each newly planted tree. Water bagswill be filled by Forestry staff as needed. 5. ACCOMPLISHMENTS: The Rose Park project will help to beautify the Disc Golf Course in Bozeman and raise public awareness regarding the benefits of our urban forest and the care needed to achieve sustainability. Citizens using the park will be able to enjoy a beautiful, green fairway, and feel a sense of ownership in the protection and care of their trees. Our goal will be reached when we look ahead 30 years from now, and we see Rose Park as one of Bozeman's premier recreation areas, where our citizens love to play disc golf under the shady canopy of large, healthy trees.
