Type of OccupanylVebic)e: Asphalt Tanker with Pup Trailer. LieeDJe: Id XA2216 Truck
Fire Originated In -Spread to: Asphalt was contained to a 50 foot long by 4 feet wide section of barrow
ditch.
Caused by: An Asphalt Truck with Pup Trailer traveling South on US191 enQOUtltered elk crossing the
road and took evasive action. The Pup Trailer carrying 2800 gallons of Asphalt overturned
on the West side leaking at a rate of 2 gallons per minute. The Asphalt ran into the barrow
ditch creating a pool approximately 50 feet long. Bozeman Hazmat detennitted the best
course of action was to drain the rem~inil\g Asphalt from the tank and. then upright the
trailer. This course of action greatly reduced the potential of losing control of the product
and possibly spilling more on the Highway surface or eveD Park land on the East side. The
Pup trailer would have beert nearly impossible to upright with the cargo on board and would
most likely have ruptured when uprighted. Bonnie Gafney ( YeUowstone National Park
Ranger ) was the lnciOOnt ComfWlnder of this incident. She was continually updated on
scene activities by Hazmat Personnel. She can be contacted at 307-646~7314 or 344-7381
West District office. Also on scene was Montana Highway Department Maintenance Chief,
Douglas Moeller. Contact at 406~S86~9S62. Truck License number m XA2116 and the Pup
trailer License is Kansas 5036.
