We both have master's degrees and each own a small business. In 1995 we were able to purchase a small home on the north side of town. Since that time, our annual income has increased approximately 25%. If we wanted to buy a house now, the cost of a similar home would be a 300% increase, which we could not afford. This discrepancy of income/wages and current housing prices does not allow Bozeman to be a diverse income community; it only allows for the wealthy to live here. One of the primary causes of homelessness is the lack of affordable housing. While I am pleased to see that the city has a proposed plan for affordable housing, the 54 proposed units is insufficient for the rapid growth Bozeman is experiencing. Please raise the number of proposed units and pass the affordable housing plan to keep Bozeman a diverse community and not let it evolve into another desirable city only the wealthy can afford.
