4. Public comment
a) Chairperson Makoutz shared a letter submitted by board member Lessa Racow, whose
term with the Tree Board has expired after 4 years. She indicated in her letter that she will
not be continuing her service and expressed the following concerns as a private citizen:
1) Xerescapes and raised planting beds: The board understands the vagueness of the
landscape ordinance, and although trees are included in the boulevard landscape,
the board agreed that other vegetation and its design does not pertain to trees
specifically.
5. New Business
a) Identify next event or community engagement function – Board member Cross suggested
the idea of establishing community orchards to be maintained and harvested by Bozeman
citizens.
1) Funding could possibly be obtained through matched grants through the city, or
from partners and donations.
2) Some ideas for placement :
HOA Parks
Schools
Community gardens
State land – MSU – S. 19th
Board member Cross will contact schools and Neighborhood Coordinator, and Chairperson
Makoutz will contact EJ Hook with MSU regarding locations.
6. Old Business
a) New Street Tree Guide – No changes to be made. Forestry division has distributed.
b) Update on UFMP – Chairperson Makoutz has been working on revisions for the final draft,
which will be reviewed by the Tree Board and Forestry Division before it is presented to the city
commission in September. The EAB component will be written in a format that can adapt to the
changes in tree population and technological advances in EAB treatment.
c) Arbor Day event recap – Board agreed that the event was a success and board members will
be exploring possibilities of where to hold the 2016 event.
7. FYI
a) Rouse Ave. rebuild – Scheduled for 2017 and 2018
b) Other board information/activities: Parks and Recreation Board, Beautification Board,
Subdivision Review Committee, Cemetery Board – No report.
8. Other – Lessa Racow was acknowledged for her 4 years of service on the Tree Board. (Thank
you, Lessa!)
Chairperson Makoutz will check with the city Clerk’s office to confirm the terms for the other
members.
9. Next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 16, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in the Training
