BABAB would like to extend to you on behalf of US Transportation Secretary Foxx, the Mayors’ Challenge for Safer People, Safer Streets. The Challenge is a call to action to improve our streets and encourage more pedestrian and bicycle accessibility and safety. The call to action asks that you issue a public statement about the importance of bicycle and pedestrian safety, form a local action team to advance safety and accessibility goals, and take local action through the Challenge activities. The Challenge activities include having a policy commitment to prioritize and integrate all road users into every transportation project, identifying and addressing barriers to make streets safe and convenient for all road users including people of all ages and abilities, gathering and tracking biking and walking data, using designs appropriate to the context of the street and its uses, expanding and improving existing roads and facilities to build biking and walking networks as part of regular and routine resurfacing and other maintenance programs, improving walking and biking safety laws and regulations, and educating and enforcing proper road use behaviors. This challenge is not as lofty as it may seem. Our community supports safer streets as demonstrated by our transportation plan and 2010 Complete Streets policy. Many of these actions are low cost and would create a much safer and more prosperous Bozeman for all of us.
