Re: Bridger Center, LLC Eminent Domain Request
Dear Mayor Krauss, Deputy Mayor Carson and City Commissioners,
The Gallatin Valley Land Trust (GVLT) respectfully submits this letter of concern regarding
eminent domain request by Bridger Center, LLC.
We believe that allowing this condemnation of open space sets a dangerous precedent, and that
open space – which is becoming increasingly rare and important as our community grows – should
not be compromised for a road unless the public benefits are significant.
In this case, we are concerned that the proposed condemnation will actually create public safety
issues and cause harm to existing public rights-of-way in the platted open space and trail corridor. If
the eminent domain request is approved, the proposed access easement will bisect an integral trail
that is part of both the East Gallatin Recreation Area and the Main Street to the Mountains trail
systems. That raises concerns regarding safety, as that trail is heavily utilized by pedestrians and
bicyclists of all ages and abilities.
Should this request for eminent domain be granted, we respectfully request that a safe bicycle and
pedestrian crossing be established at that location to ensure the safety of trail users.
Thank you for the opportunity to comment. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions
or concerns.
Sincerely,
Penelope Pierce
Executive Director
