Re: Historic Preservation Awards
The Preservation Board is now finalizing plans for the Bozeman Preservation Awards program. This has
taken a long time and many discussions, as we have approached the challenge of designing an awards
program that will encourage the very highest standards in preservation, educate the community about
Historic Preservation and its value to neighborhoods and the greater community, and showcase
exemplary contributions to preservation of Bozeman's architectural and cultural heritage.
Awards will be offered in five categories. We do not expect that there will be awards in all categories
every year; our aim is to have a variety of award options, with some categories, particularly for
buildings, adhering to very strict and meaningful standards. Other categories will allow us to recognize
people and organizations whose activities contribute to Historic Preservation.
We are particularly excited about launching an award for continued maintenance, which will allow the
recognition of many deserving buildings that have not been altered or renovated, but simply lovingly
maintained. These homes and commercial buildings are the foundation of historic Bozeman, and will
finally get the credit they deserve. We also hope that a web-based nomination process with clear
guidelines will encourage strong community participation.
Thank you for your patience with us in this matter. It was important to us to honor that patience by
reporting on our progress before the end of the year. We believe the extra time we have taken to create
a new Awards Program with upgraded standards and guidelines will make our Awards more meaningful
to the community and easier for the Preservation Board to administer. We want our Awards program to
be stable, predictable, and manageable for ourselves and future Preservation Boards.
