Dear Commissioners;
Once again I’m wondering why the Mayor and City Commissioners have not stepped up as other
Montana communities have. Now I read in this morning’s Chronicle that even the Livingston City
Commission has stepped up. We all know that increased coal train traffic will not only impact our
community’s health but also safety. As we look at the effects of global warming we need to question
the shipment of coal to Asia, when it returns to us in the form of air pollution.
“The city of Livingston wants federal regulators to consider the impacts that
increased coal train traffic would have on the city in a pending analysis of the
proposed Tongue River Railroad.City commissioners voted Tuesday night to make
the request to the Surface Transportation Board.The Northern Plains Resource
Council says local governments in Missoula and Whitefish along with the Lewis and
Clark City-County Board of Health have passed similar resolutions or sent letters
arguing more coal trains would impact public health and safety.”
It’s time to step up and be accountable to the residents of this valley.
Sincerely,
Mary Lee Reese
