New Trail Projects • Snowfill Recreation Area. Thanks to a Parkland Improvement Grant, a Recreational Trails Program grant, and private donations, GVLT was able to construct nearly a mile of new trail at Snowfill (pictured below), improve some drainage problems in the parking lot, and install a new memorial bench; a second memorial bench will be installed later this fall, weather permitting. The trail was built by Zac Cavaness of Land Tech Montana and forms a figure eight, which allows visitors to choose many route options. GVLT is now working on an amended site plan for the parking area and exploring the possibilities of expanding the parking lot and installing a permanent vault toilet. • Bozeman to the “M” Trail. A public meeting to exchange ideas about the proposed bike, pedestrian path to the “M” along Bridger Drive, was held on October 8 by the Western Federal Lands Highway Division (WFLHD). The project is in the feasibility phase to inform the next steps of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process. Public involvement opportunities will continue into the first half of 2015, and the WFLHD has set up a website with more information. Construction is expected in 2016. 2 GVLT Report to RPAB - Fall 2014 www.gvlt.org Trail Maintenance & Improvements • Volunteer Program. Since July, GVLT engaged 137 volunteers in over 400 hours of volunteer service on our trail system. Projects included weed pulling at Drinking Horse Mountain, Burke Park, Sourdough Canyon, Highland Glen Nature Preserve, and the East Gallatin Recreation Area; resurfacing trails at Bronken Fields, Valley Unit and Rose Park; and distributing leashes for the Lend-A-Leash program. • Regional Park Bridge Receives Beautification Award. GVLT and partners received a Bozeman Beautification Award for construction of a new bridge in the north end of the Regional Park near Baxter Lane. • Burke Park Benches & Tree. GVLT partnered with the City of Bozeman to install two new memorial benches in Burke Park. A new western larch tree and a memorial plaque were put in to replace the Chris Boyd tree, which died this past year. • Signage Improvements. GVLT will be updating all trail totem signage this fall. This is no small project, as there are over 500 signs in our totem system! Also this fall, in partnership with the City of Bozeman, Greater Gallatin Watershed Council, Local Water Quality District, and US Forest Service, GVLT used a small grant from the DEQ to educate users about the impacts of dog waste on water quality. We installed three new signs along the Sourdough Canyon Trail with iconic, simple graphics help recreationists understand that dog poo is not good in your drinking water supply. GVLT and partners hope to replicate the signage at other trail locations next year.
