Story Mill Community Park Master Planning Workshop
Building upon the Story Mill Park Conceptual Plan & Budget previously approved, what park activities, features
and programming are most important to you?
Introduction
In February 2014, with Trails, Open Space and Parks Bond money, the City Commission approved the 54-acre
Story Mill Community Park proposal to purchase land and help develop an active park, trails and wildlife area
including a half mile of the East Gallatin River on Bozeman's north side. Over twenty community organizations
are partnering with the city of Bozeman and The Trust for Public Land in developing the Park. Bozeman
residents have also been highly involved throughout the process. The Trust for Public Land is working to
fundraise the additional funds needed to develop the park. Public input is now sought to refine the park
conceptual plan at an upcoming community workshop and online here.
Thank you for taking the time to participate in the Story Mill Community Park master planning process. You can
fill out the survey by clicking the blue Post button on this page located under Your Response; and / or come to
the public workshop on Wednesday, October 1st at the Emerson Cultural Center Ballroom - arrive any time
between 5 -8 p.m. to participate. The survey and workshop are designed around five themes: Trails &
Connectivity; Nature Education & Interpretation; Community Gathering; Outdoor Play; Infrastructure &
Sustainability.
Your input is very valuable in helping to refine the conceptual plan for this extraordinary new community park.
We look forward to reviewing your responses. (Most pictures provided by TPL)

Potential Opportunities - If there is an opportunity or amenity that you feel is important to Story Mill
Park that has not been included, please describe it.

Please bring the Streamline bus out to the park. Is is possible to provide parking for skiers going to Bridger
Bowl in the winter and have the bus stop there? Please include bathrooms and water fountains (for drinking and
for looking at) in the park. Please no urban camping. It will be hard to maintain. The orchard is a great idea.

I would like to hear/see more emphasis on the amenity of preserving its current character which is quiet and low
human use at any one time. I think its good that most of the uses are localized near the Bridger Drive Access. I
think the fire pit and southern end picnic tables should be nixed to prevent trash and attraction of scavengers.
There also appear to be entirely too many trails depicted that would unnecessarily carve up available habitat.
This park is adjacent to my neighborhood so I use the Spur Trail frequently. It is very important to me for this
future park to retain its natural atmosphere. I think building too many features - whether they be buildings,
playgrounds, campgrounds, picnic tables or trails - will ultimately detract from its value as a nature/wildlife
viewing park as well as cost more money to build and maintain. I am so excited about this park and all the
thoughtfulness that has gone into it and I hope others agree that less is more in this case.

Keep as much of it natural please. Don't eliminate wildlife habitat for things like a splash park, or playing fields.
Please include weed control in all budgeting. As soon as you disturb these areas, weeds will be the first to
grow. And annual weed control is essential.
Be careful of degrading natural riparian cover along the river, essential for healthy streams and rivers. Riparian
cover provides much-needed shade, and acts as a natural filtering system.

Our family is very excited about this awesome new community park, with all the creative ideas for interacting
with the natural world, including the teaching farm, stream access, and wetlands. Thank you!

Designated quiet space with no sports play and located off main through ways. Yoga space could be individual
raised platforms grouped. Raised deck style will keep them will keep them clear from snow for longer.

Keeping the central focus on the intrinsic, natural and historic elements of the site should be the most important
feature. The Splash Pad/Water Park sound like an over developed feature that would be a waste of money and
resources--that is the only proposed amenity I have an issue with. I am also against a fenced dog park--one of
the reasons I recreate around Story Mill is due to the lack of dogs. Improve the trails and keep the natural/rural
emphasis of the site preserved.

A labyrinth would be a very positive and progressive addition to the park. A labyrinth is an ancient tool for
meditation and inspiration. It doesn't have to be expensive. Lots of city parks have them, and they are growing
in popularity as many people in our society are drawn to spirituality and personal growth. A labyrinth could be
combined with an outdoor art installation, creating art that is interactive and assists in human development. It
may sound strange or new, but they are increasingly common in public spaces. Nature is a wonderful place for
humans to have a chance to go inward, find peace and search for insight.
A labyrinth in story mill park would be incredible.

I'd like to see this park be about nature and the experience of that. I believe kids play areas should be
connected to this vs. traditional playground equipment. We don't need more urbanization.

Community Gardens. I think that you should seriously reconsider putting housing in the corner of the park
(blocking the main neighborhoods who want this park so bad) and build community gardens. The community
garden space is impossible to get a spot in because of the high demand. Hawthorne the only school for this
district is overflowing with children. It cannot handle the capacity of new families. A very small amount of
people know you are planning on building even more housing here. Give us a break Legends has already
destroyed the openness of the land out here.

To reiterate, I am very supportive of a nature, history, and local agriculture themed park that serves as a trail
hub to existing nodes and the new M connector. A small playground to compliment the natural features would
be great.

I visit the Story Mill Spur Trail several times a week and regularly see deer, mink, rabbits, birds and other wildlife
in this area, as well as in the former trailer court. In addition to being a good migratory bird stop, there is a sand
hill crane family that resides in the field every year. I also understand that Bridger Canyon Drive near the
former trailer court is a high widlife-vehicle collision spot. Please remember to take wildlife into consideration
throughout the planning process, from lighting, to noise, to usage hours, etc., so that this remains a wildlife-
friendly area.

For the more public section of the park, consider allowing our local Bozeman artists a place where they can
spontaneously perform or display their art -- like NYC's Central Park! For the more natural section of the park,
please consider Richard Louv's book, "Last Child in the Woods" and create accessible nature rather than a
water/splash park that is tailored to a very narrow age group for a short season. Kids and adults alike need
"Nature Nearby," or easy access to nature, which is especially important to those who can't easily drive to the
mountains. Climbing trees and boulders, playing in creeks, and creating forts under sagebrush is great for kids.
We all need parks where we can hear creeks and birds, and get away from loud cars and splash parks. I
understand the need for family biking, but would personally enjoy not having to duck out of the way of those
(few) very-fast-moving bicycles while my family is enjoying walking on a trail.
