Your current occupation: Research biologist
Employer: Yellowstone Ecological Research Center
How long have you lived in the Bozeman Area?: 1-5 yr
Which position are you applying for?: Tree Advisory Board
City Limits: yes
Have you ever served on a City or County Board or Commission?: no
Please explain your relevant qualifications, interests and experiences.: As a young professional, I am
looking for ways to be more involved in the community, while the tree board appeals to my interests
and experience in ecology. I have also observed the workings of a tree board and local government
when I was a newspaper reporter in Big Timber. There I wrote stories on backyard mountain pine beetle
attacks, invasive Russian olive removals, noxious weed sightings, and the threat of emerald ash borers (a
major focus in recent Bozeman Tree Advisory Board meeting notes). My work at the Big Timber Pioneer
won awards at the state newspaper contest for government and natural resources reporting. This
experience with urban forest issues, local government operations, and public communication
complements skills acquired as a Systems Ecology graduate student and research biologist at the
Yellowstone Ecological Research Center. I am knowledgable in plant identification, taxonomy, and
physiology and forest disease ecology, which would benefit the inventory and disease prevention
components of the Bozeman Tree Advisory Board's master plan, and have experience with geographic
information systems (GIS), a useful tool for resource planning. This scientific experience would also help
me understand and critically evaluate the best science available to urban forest management. An
appointment to the Bozeman Tree Advisory Board would let me apply my skills and experience working
on exciting and important issues to benefit our neighbors and trees. Thank you.
