Dear Commissioners:
In regards to the recently acquired BearCat...
I am angry and disappointed with the Police Chief and the City Manager for their lack of transparency
and possible deliberate concealment of the acquisition of the BearCat. Also, I feel this type of
equipment has not place in Bozeman or possibly in our country. To me it is like the "gateway drug" of
police militarization and sets an inappropriate precedence of military intervention that can get out of
hand.
While I appreciate the law enforcement personnel that we have in Bozeman and I want to support them
in their jobs, this is not the means to that end.
I request that the City immediately:
- Send the BearCat back to Washington
- Suspend, fire, or otherwise seriously reprimand the City Manager. He had way too many
opportunities to bring this obviously contentious issue to the commission.
- Find out what's driving the motivation for the Police Chief and also consider a reprimand for his
records
- Postpone the Jail Bond vote while new policies of transparency and accountability are put into motion
in the Police Department.
Resepectfully yours,
Marcia Kaveney
