Dear Commissioners,
After careful thought on this subject and through many casual conversations about Bozeman’s new
police vehicle, I am writing to urge you to send it back. Not one person I spoke with wants it. We
don’t need to use this type of armored tank to take care of criminals. We do need more helicopters,
able-bodied backcountry rescuers, snowmobiles, and level headed thinkers to take care of the
largest threat to lives in this part of the country. Montanans die in avalanches, perish in the
mountains, and drown in the rivers. An armored tank does no good in finding lost hikers or
snowboarders trapped in avalanches. Let’s not send the message to our community and new people
moving to town that we have such an incredibly high crime rate that we need military force to take
them down, because we don’t! If in fact, you think that Bozeman is such a decrepit town, I need to
pull up my roots and find another place to live. Luckily, our town is safe and our police force capable
of taking care of the crimes. I may be able to live here for a few more years. But if you decide to
start an arsenal of military equipment and the citizens of your town become aware of what you are
doing, you will end up with criminals rather than people who enjoy life, the beauty of our sacred
place in the mountains, and happen to really like one another. This is a seed of war and it scares the
hell out of me.
Most sincerely,
Karen Steele
