Dear City Commission:
Phil Knight recently penned a very thoughtful email about the Bearcat that capturesmy sentiments as a professional in the conservation field in Bozeman.
Dear City Commission,
I am stumped how the Police Department could aquire such an expensive toywithout your knowledge. Not to mention without telling the people of Bozeman. DidChris Kukulski think we wouldn't notice?
The militarization of the police force represented by this vehicle is very disturbing.
One of the rationales used in the Homeland Security grant application for the
acquisition of this ridiculous piece of military hardware is the presence of
"environmental groups" in Southwest Montana. Really?? These are the groups that
employ as many as 230 people (myself included) and pay out over $8 million in
salaries alone here in Gallatin and Park counties. This is how you respond to one of
the most important segments of the local economy? With an assault vehicle?
You all need to return that beast. We have better ways of dealing with conflict in
Montana - like talking.
