Dear Mayor Krause and City Commissioners,
I am writing to oppose keeping the armored vehicle which the city received through the HomelandSecurity Program. I am concerned that such a vehicle sends the wrong message to the community,making it seem that we need a militarized approach to deal with crime here. I simply do not believethat is true.
As was demonstrated in Ferguson, MO, responding to community protests or concerns with militarizedforce escalates rather than calms a difficult situation. I trust that our police force is well trained inresponse to community concerns and that it knows how to negotiate and handle outrage or chaoswithout needing an armored vehicle.
Since the vehicle was secured without your knowledge, I urge you to return it and restore myconfidence in your decision-making.
