Babcock Bozeman, MT 59715 Re: Letter of Support for Hyalite Canyon Road Plowing – Friends of Hyalite Application for Secure Rural Schools Act Funding for the Winter of 2014-2015 Dear Sir or Madame: On behalf of the City of Bozeman, I am writing in support of the Gallatin National Forest’s (GNF) stated goal of improving and maintaining the Hyalite Canyon Road to facilitate winter recreational use and Friends of Hyalite’s efforts to assist the GNF in achieving that goal. Plowing of the road over the past several seasons has proved immensely popular with winter visitors, including climbers, Nordic and backcountry skiers, ice fisherman, sledders, and snowshoers. Without plowing, the road typically becomes impassable by mid-December and severely limits access to winter recreational opportunities that Hyalite Canyon offers. Year-round access to Bozeman’s most utilized recreation area is critical to the community’s quality of life, supports the areas outdoor lifestyle and tourism-based economy. The City of Bozeman respectfully requests that the Resource Advisory Committee approve the Friend’s of Hyalite’s application for Secure Rural Schools Act funding to plow the Hyalite Canyon Road. Without the help of RAC funds and other partners, this service would be much diminished in the winter months. We ask that you continue the investment that you have made in the snowplowing for the community and all the users that enjoy that area. Please do not hesitate to contact me at (406) 582-2341 or jkrauss@bozeman.net if you have any questions about this letter. I appreciate your consideration of the Friend’s of Hyalite’s application. Sincerely, Jeffrey K. Krauss Mayor City of Bozeman Core Values Integrity: Be honest, hard-working, reliable and accountable to the public.
