SUBJECT: Update on Story Mill Landfill Corrective Measures Assessment

BACKGROUND:
The City of Bozeman is in the process of selecting a remediation technology to address the possible migration of contaminants off the Story Mill landfill. Because the landfill is regulated
by the Solid Waste Division of the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), the
installation of any remediation system must follow DEQ regulatory requirements.
The DEQ requires that a corrective measures assessment (CMA) be completed to evaluate and select a remediation alternative. The CMA process has a defined sequence of steps that the City
and DEQ must follow in order to select a final corrective measure that will be implemented at
the landfill site.
Tetra Tech, the City’s consultant for the landfill remediation project, submitted the CMA to DEQ
on September 4, 2014. DEQ notified the City on September 18, 2014 that the CMA meet the requirement of the Administrative Rule of Montana (ARM 17.50.1308(3)).
The complete CMA and associated correspondence from DEQ have been posted on the City’s
landfill website (http://www.bozeman.net/Projects/Bozeman-Landfill-Soil-Gas-
Study/News/Approved-Corrective-Measures-Assessment). City staff are currently working with the DEQ to arrange the public meeting required as part of the CMA process. Details on the date, time and format of the public meeting will be posted on the City website and communicated with
the neighbors and the Commission as they become available.

NEXT STEPS: Schedule a public meeting for the DEQ to receive public comment on the proposed remedial
alternative. After final selection of an alternative, the City will initiate detailed design and
installation of a remediation system at the Story Mill landfill site.
