HomeMy WebLinkAboutSenior Week Plan April 27 May was designated the first National Senior Citizens Month in 1963 by President John Kennedy and the name was changed to Older Americans Month by President Jimmy Carter in 1980. This annual event recognizes older citizens and their contributions to our country and society, as well as brings attention to Senior Citizen needs and available services. ********************* ********************************************************* There will be a special “Dance with the Stars” dance at the Senior Center on their new floor, on Saturday May 16, at 6:00pm with open dancing beginning at 7:00pm till 10:00pm. This is the grand finale for the fund raising for the new floor, and is a one day early pre-event for Older Americans Week. The Old Country Players will be providing music.   “Older Americans Week” May 17 – May 23 in Bozeman.   1          Bozeman and Gallatin County will have Proclaimed May 17 – May 23 Older Americans Week.   2         Sunday May 17: Many local churches will incorporate a brief recognition or honoring of seniors and may use a “Senior Citizen” theme for Sunday church services on May 17.   3       All week May 17-23: Many local businesses will designate special Senior Discount Shopping Days.  Ask local businesses where you shop if they are giving a senior discount.        All week May 17-23: Area fitness and exercise centers will provide tours of their facilities and give visitors the privilege of attending a free complimentary session during the week. Call before going to be sure a particular gym is participating and to pick a best time.   4          Tuesday, May 19:   The Senior Center will host service organizations at a “Senior Information Fair” from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. Senior service provider groups of all kinds will provide information and answer questions in the Senior Center Dining Room.  5          Wednesday, May 20: The Bozeman Library will have a tour at 10:15 am highlighting the many valued services it provides to the community and seniors. The Library tour will meet in the lobby by the coffee shop which opens at 9:30 am.  The group will tour the facility and backrooms and include the special book delivery program to homebound people, computer classes offered, special equipment to magnify print, large print materials, talking books, and other things specifically for seniors. Wednesday, May 20:  Senior assisted living facilities will have open houses to show their facilities and services. Aspen Pointe, 1201 Highland Blvd, Bozeman, Wed, May 20, 10am – 1pm Bozeman Lodge, 1547 North Hunters Way, Bozeman, Wed, May 20, 12noon – 4pm ParkHaven, 100 Hamilton Court, Manhattan, Wed, May 20, 10am – 3pm Spring Meadows, 3175 Graf Street, Bozeman, Wed, May 20, 10am – 2pm 6        Thursday, May 21: A free showing of the movie “Young at Heart” at 10:00 am at the Senior Center. Magnificent documentary movie "Young at Heart" is a tribute to life. You are taken to meet a group of senior citizens that defied staying home and became involved in doing something maybe most of them never thought capable of doing: singing. A film highly recommended for everyone because of the positive message it gets across.         Thursday, May 21: As in past years an “Older American’s Dinner” will be held at the Senior Center at 12:00 noon. This special and delicious dinner is free for those persons of age 80 or older. Older persons each receive a beautiful rose. Please RSVP by calling 586-2421 in advance so enough food is prepared.         Thursday, May 21: Educational Seminar by Detective Mary Ann Rangitsch of the Bozeman Police Department on “Personal Safety Issues” at 1:30pm at the Senior Center. Bozeman is not the small close community it was in the 1960's. Topics such as how to react when a total stranger shows up at your door, evening shopping trips, and the ever present financial scams will be discussed.   7         Friday, May 22:  Health issue activities related to aging will be held at the Bozeman Deaconess Hospital, in the Meadowlark Room. At 10:30 am specific topics will relate to Travel and Aging such as using oxygen away from home, carrying prescription medications, continuing exercise while out of town, and infection prevention. At 1:15 pm topics related to Advanced Directives such as a living will and power of attorney will be discussed.
