HomeMy WebLinkAbout02-07-07 Senior Citizens Advisory Board MinutesMINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY BOARD BOZEMAN, MONTANA February 7, 2007 ***************************** The Senior Citizens Advisory Board met in the Commission Meeting Room, City Hall, 411 East Main Street, on Wednesday, February 7, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. Present were Chair Sheila Velazquez, Ken Tiahrt, Charlotte Kress, Robert Seltzer, Donna Dehn, Agency on Aging Area IV Rep. Peggy Tombre, and Deputy City Clerk Cynthia Jordan Delaney. Call to Order—2:00 p.m.—Commission Meeting Room, City Hall, 411 East Main Report Items Introduction of new member Donna Dehn and reintroduction of all members Brief overview of last meetings Discussion Items Philosophy, role, and objectives of the board *To identify the issue and impress the importance/pressure on the people who will do the work. *To make recommendations. *To work with the Senior Center to carry out the recommendations of this board. *Advisory—we’re policy makers. *Revisit parking issues. Senior Center Motion and Vote - It was moved and seconded for Sheila Velazquez to send an email to Bozeman Senior Center Director Judy Morrill proposing ways for the Senior Center to alleviate the winter parking problem and deal with cars illegally parked on the street. Those voting Aye being Ken Tiahrt, Robert Seltzer, Charlotte Kress, Sheila Velazquez, and Donna Dehn. Those voting No being none. The motion carried. Motion and Vote - It was moved and seconded for Sheila Velazquez to write a letter to the City Commission and the City Manager stating the recommendations of the Senior Citizens Advisory Board to add these two essential items to the budget: to fund the repair of the floor tiles and the complete air-conditioning of the Bozeman Senior Center. It will be stated in the letter that these budget items are related to sanitation and physical safety. Those voting Aye being Ken Tiahrt, Robert Seltzer, Charlotte Kress, Sheila Velazquez, and Donna Dehn. Those voting No being none. The motion carried. Revisit future needs assessment Motion and Vote - It was moved and seconded for Sheila Velazquez to write and submit an article to the Bozeman Daily Chronicle, “Seniors on the Go,” and whatever publications are relevant to seniors in order to inform the public about the identity, purpose, and advisory function of the Senior Citizens Advisory Board; suggest topics of need and interest to seniors (for example, safety, housing, access to the Senior Center, caregiving issues, etc.); and ask the public to provide feedback about its needs and interests to the Board. The Senior Citizens Advisory Board will then use this public feedback to draft a needs assessment for local seniors. Those voting Aye being Ken Tiahrt, Robert Seltzer, Charlotte Kress, Sheila Velazquez, and Donna Dehn. Those voting No being none. The motion carried. *Robert Seltzer stated that he will contact the Business School at Montana State University (MSU) to see if they would help work on the needs assessment. *Contacting the Health and Human Services Dept. at MSU was also discussed (maybe the needs assessment could be a project or internship opportunity for a student). Appoint a secretary Motion and Vote - It was moved and seconded for Donna Dehn to assume the position of secretary in order to prepare the agenda, take notes, and prepare the minutes for the meetings of the Senior Citizens Advisory Board. Those voting Aye being Ken Tiahrt, Robert Seltzer, Charlotte Kress, Sheila Velazquez, and Donna Dehn. Those voting No being none. The motion carried.
