Ken Tiahrt, Chairperson *************************************************************************** / The month of May has been declared “National Older Americans Month” for a number of years. This is a very appropriate type of celebration to recognize our older citizens and their contributions to our country and society, as well as to focus attention on particular needs and services available to Seniors. The City of Bozeman Senior Citizen Advisory Board is preparing plans to emphasize a special week long celebration of “Older Americans in Bozeman and the Gallatin Valley” May 17 through May 23, 2009. This note gives a tentative outline of events that will likely be included and gives a very early and short description of these events as they are currently envisioned. We invite any person or organization to be included and we welcome your input of ideas at any time. We are inviting every community in the Gallatin Valley (Bozeman, Belgrade, Manhattan, and Three Forks) to become involved through their Senior Centers and their Chamber of Commerce. ************************************************ *************************** The following outline for “Celebrate Our Seniors Week” in Bozeman and the Gallatin Valley during May 17 – May 23 is presently tentative and other participants in the communities have not yet been contacted and invited to assist with their specialties of the various things listed. Events will be spread out during the week depending on participants schedules. A City Proclamation of Older Americans Week will be requested from the Mayor. It will be suggested to local churches that a “Senior Citizen” theme be used for Sunday church services on May 17, if it will fit with their other plans and events. The Chamber of Commerce will be asked to assist with designation of several mid-week days as special Senior Discount Shopping Days and to help provide advance promotion for recognition and installation of permanent “Senior Parking Only” signs. Also we will ask the Chamber to help arrange for area restaurants to have “dining specials” for “Older Americans”, of course, many already provide senior discounts. One day will be designated, as in past years, for an “Older American’s Dinner” at the various Senior Centers. Some will likely continue the tradition of a free dinner for those persons over the age of 80. A given day will focus on “Senior Physical Activities” with tours and discounts at area fitness and exercise centers, including Senior Center programs in Bozeman and Belgrade. A special day will focus on “Senior Health Care” with possible involvement of the Bozeman Deaconess Hospital, and perhaps other health care providers. A day will be devoted to “What Seniors do for the Community” having RSVP (and others) feature Senior’s volunteer activities and contributions. A day will focus on “Senior Services” with invitations to set up display and advertising “tables” at the Senior Centers that day. Senior Centers may arrange an evening of social activity including a special evening meal followed by an Older American’s dance. Perhaps a “Walking Excursion/Parade” through downtown Bozeman on one day ending at the City Library or the Senior Center for refreshments will be arranged. A special Bozeman Chronicle Senior Insert for May with focus on “Celebrate Our Seniors Week” with a schedule, and participant advertisements will be requested.
