With the exception of today, ice rinks have been open since December 22nd. The Parks crews were able to build the rinks in a week, which is a record, thanks
to their diligence, dedication and of course, some well timed help from Mother Nature.
Due to the overwhelming interest in ice rink conditions, there is now an “ice rink hotline” which
is updated daily. For those interested the # is 582-2905.
Channel 20 on cable or the “City” channel as it is commonly known, is now showing a PowerPoint presentation Doug, our foreman
put together. During commission breaks and when the channel is in screen saver mode, information and photos are scrolled regarding rinks, rules, sledding locations, off leash areas.
Etc……. This is our first attempt at marketing the division.
The snow has kept the crew busy with plowing sidewalks and parking lots and keeping handicapped accesses clear along with
the numerous curb cuts that lead up to the sidewalks.
Now that it has warmed up and refroze, the crews are sanding sidewalks where needed.
Garbage and dog station maintenance has remained
steady throughout the first part of the winter, which confirms the notion that we truly are becoming a year around park system.
Shop and indoor projects include, rehabbing picnic tables
for another year, painting restrooms, repairing vandalism, building new garbage can racks and backflow cages and carving out new trail totems.
Ron, Doug and I are starting to go through
the operating budget and are trying to produce a budget that will work for us and the citizens, yet save some money. A “proactive, well thought out belt tightening”.
The new playground
for Bogert has been ordered and is on its way. The Kompan design playground will be erected in the spring, when the snow disappears. The old one will be dismantled, more than likely,
in March and April.
Locations on sewer and water lines have taken place at Bogert, regarding where to best place the new restroom. Our initial thought was to put the facility in front
of the pump house, yet we are in a stream setback. So that lead us to another, better, in my opinion, option to stick the facility where the trash enclosure is located. In addition
to not reducing the flow into the pavilion, this location is closer to the sewer and water lines………………stay tuned.
I will be talking to James of Facilities and we will be going over the
maintenance contracts and deciding which ones we can eliminate and have the Park crews take over. This is one more step in trying to consolidate and save the city/taxpayer money.
