Others present: Ryon Stover, Bozeman Forestry Department. Introductions The Board members welcomed Danielle Nichols, the Tree Board’s new member. Meeting Minutes Approval A motion was made and seconded to approve the May 31st, 2006 meeting minutes as written. The motion passed unanimously. New Brochure It had been decided at the May 31st meeting that this entire meeting would be devoted to discussion of the new Tree Board brochure. Gene Keith volunteered to take the lead in writing the brochure, but he asked the other board members to give him more direction. Discussion ranged back and forth over the contents of the brochure: the following structure was established and decisions were made: An introduction to the Value of Trees Urban forests have certain things that they do. Explain this in two or three sentences. Citizens Responsibilities—People will do the right thing if they understand what is expected of them and why. As a Bozeman resident, what am I required to do? Use an interactive approach. Liz encouraged the use of graphics, to keep the brochure simple. Suggestions: (a) Start with rules for the boulevards: permit required; spacing: 30 foot minimum; 75% ground cover rule; diversity of species encouraged and explanation of why; watering requirements for newly planted trees (2 years); pruning will be done by City of Bozeman; etc.. (b) Touch on hedge maintenance and planting responsibilities (c) Add the “Triangle Corner Rule”—use a graphic to show what this means; use a prompt such as, “I live on a corner lot, do I have special responsibilities?” Maybe we could use a table format: Question Yes No Tree planting permit required for boulevard planting? X Tree planting permit required for yard planting? X Homeowner responsible for watering boulevard trees? X (2 years) Homeowner responsible for pruning boulevard trees? X City of Boz will do pruning Etc. Ecological Benefits and Quality of Life Air purification, oxygen regeneration, improvement of water quality, reduces noise, glare, heat, evaporation, etc. Economic Benefits The value of landscaping: increases property values by 20%, energy conservation, etc. Publication Citation(s) This publication is produced by the Bozeman Tree Advisory Board in collaboration with the City of Bozeman Forestry Department. We should cite other publications for reference rather than repeating the same information. Other Items (a) Danielle mentioned that in the fall, she may request a change in the Board’s meeting time: from mid-day to evenings. She will bring this up for discussion at a future meeting. Agenda items for upcoming meeting: Gene Keith will bring in a prototype of the brochure to the next meeting for further review and editing. Street Tree Master Plan. Gallatin Valley water issue. Durston and Rouse projects. Start planning the 2007 Arbor Day event (suggestions: Beall Park plantings; new Bozeman Library tree planting; others?. The meeting was adjourned at 1:05 pm by unanimous vote. The next Tree Board meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, July 12th at noon in the City Hall conference room.
