Others present: Jennifer Robbins, Bozeman Forestry Department. Meeting Minutes Approval The March 29th meeting minutes were not approved; deferred for approval at the next Board meeting. Board Membership Chris Nixon announced that he is resigning from the Board. He will write a letter to that effect to the Clerk of the Commission. Liz will check to see what the remaining terms of our other Board members are. Chris and Jennifer will talk to Aida Murgo, who is working on the Arbor Day tree planting project, to see if she would be interested in applying for the vacancy created by Chris’ resignation. 2006 Arbor Day Project (April 28, 2006) The Emily Dickenson School Planting Project had been chosen as the focal event for Arbor Day this year, but Jennifer reported that they had recently chosen not to participate. In the mean time, Jennifer has spoken with Aida Murgo who is trying to coordinate a tree planting project at the Irving School. There are spots on the boulevard for eight trees, along Dickerson and Alderson, which the City Forestry Department approved for planting (2 Brandon elms and 6 bur oak, worth $800 at Heisel’s). Aida applied to the Turner Foundation for funding, but was turned down because they focus on teenage at-risk youth issues not school kid activities. Aida needs to raise a minimum of $400 to do the Arbor Day event, which will cover planting four trees on Arbor Day. The remaining four trees will be planted when money becomes available and construction at the school is completed. Heisel Nursery will provide eight trees at a cost of $800. Ben Zavora (Sweet Pea Landscaping) is willing to dig all the holes for $240. The total need for the project is $1,040. Shelly Engler made the motion to spend $400 from the National Arbor Day Foundation Grant to fund this tree planting at the Irving School. The motion was seconded by Liz Galli-Noble and passed unanimously. Liz volunteered to write a press release and Gene volunteered to contact the newspaper and TV stations. The question was asked if there are any requirements for Arbor Day events. Jennifer and Ryon will take care of this. (Declaration from the Mayor?) Agenda items for upcoming meeting: Tree permit approval—could all the requirements be incorporated in one permit? DRC permits could be streamlined. The present process is confusing and time consuming. Does the Forestry Department have guidelines for city owned trees? What species are encouraged? Street Tree Master Plan—produced by the Tree Board. Membership problem. Gallatin Valley water issue. The next Tree Board meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 31, 2006 at noon in the City Hall conference room.
