This document is prepared by Doug Brekke,P.E.of Black Box Design. The intent of this
document is to provide a fair and equal opportunity for sound system contractors to bid on a
project to install a paging and music system in the Bozeman Public Library.Black Box Design
intends to bid on the project. This document makes every attempt to be fair to all potential
bidders and provide an opportunity to win the bid by providing the lowest cost option for the
City of Bozeman.
The list of materials includes acceptable products from multiple manufacturers. All potential
bidders can offer substitute products. The appropriateness of proposed substitutes will be
evaluated by Doug Brekke,P.E.to verify that the products are of similar quality and function to
those in the original list of materials. All potential bidders will be notified of results of the review
of proposed substitutes by way of addendum.
The Bozeman Public Library Sound System shall have six zones. Each zone shall have individual
control and dedicated power amplifier. All zones shall have distributed loudspeakers fed by a 70
Volt outputs from the dedicated power amplifiers. Each power amplifier shall have a minimum
output of 150 Watts into a 70 Volt load. The loudspeaker transformers shall be tapped in a way
that presents the appropriate load to the amplifier(within the output capacity of the power
amplifier). This list of materials includes equipment that will replace the existing sound
equipment in the large meeting room.
The electronic audio equipment shall be mounted in a new wall-mounted equipment rack in the
basement mechanical/electrical room. All electronic control and amplification equipment shall
be rack-mountable.Rack shelves are not acceptable.Existing empty conduits are available to be
used by the sound system contractor to run speaker and microphone wires between the basement
and upper floors.Install new raceway in exposed areas. Raceway is not required for wires
installed above ceilings or in walls. Cables installed above ceilings shall be secured with
appropriate straps and tie-wraps as high above the ceiling as is practical. In no case shall the wires
lay on suspended ceiling tiles or sheetrock ceilings.Cables shall be routed to avoid direct contact
with existing electrical, electronic, and mechanical systems.Ceiling suspension wires can be used
to support new audio wires.
Loudspeakers shall be mounted in a way that transfers the weight of the loudspeaker to the
ceiling grid(instead of the ceiling tile or sheetrock).Additional zones may be added at a later
date.Provide additional home-runs of speaker wire to"subzones"that may become zones in the
future.Review exact quantity of subzones with the Owner. The Main Reading Room

software design and discuss with the contractor.Any disagreements over specific software issues
will be resolved by the Owner. The DSP software shall include a parametric equalizer for each
zone. The parametric equalizer shall be set with the assistance of audio test equipment with Fast
Fourier Transform capability.Doug Brekke can provide this capability to the contractor for a fee
of$300.
All cables shall be continuous runs without splices.XLR connectors shall be soldered and
Phoenix connectors shall be connected to the continuous cable runs.Intermediate splice or
