Commission Memorandum
REPORT TO: Honorable Mayor and City Commission
FROM: John M. Alston, Water/Sewer Superintendent
Chris Kukulski, City Manager
SUBJECT: Award Bid for 2008 Dump Truck
MEETING DATE: October 15, 2007 Consent Agenda
BACKGROUND: Three bids were received for a 2008 Dump Truck for use in the
Water/Sewer Operations department. After reviewing the bids submitted, the Kenworth T300, at
$86,124.00, meets or exceeds our requirements. The bid for the Kenworth T600, $104,204.00
with 8 exceptions, was over the budgeted amount, and the Freightliner M2106, $83,408.00, and
the International 7400, $88,594.00, each had many exceptions, 15 and 8 respectively.
The following specifications are extremely important in the daily use and safety of our crews that
were considered in the bid specifications of this dump truck:
Cab shall be of huck bolt construction:
Kenworth is the only truck with this construction, which allows the cab to be taken apart
for repair if needed
Hood shall be equipped with hood safety latch to prevent hood from closing while maintaining
truck:
Our Selection Committee felt this option was imperative to prevent the hood from
accidentally closing while personnel where maintaining the engine. Kenworth and
International have this option.
Doors shall have full length stainless steel hinges and door seals shall be mounted on the doors:
Kenworth is the only truck with this hinge. This hinge keeps the door centered on the cab

Mirrors shall be mounted to the cab and not the doors:
This configuration provides visibility to rear of the truck if the door is open and doesn’t
require as much adjustment of the mirrors as is required if the mirrors are mounted to the
door. Kenworth has this option, Freightliner and International do not.
Truck shall have color coded and numbered wiring and air lines:
This option helps our mechanics in servicing this truck. Kenworth and International have
this option, Freightliner does not.
With the number of operators within our department, we feel the Kenworth T300 meets or
exceeds the required specifications while the others do not, and it offers the best piece of
equipment based on overall efficiency, durability and safety
RECOMMENDATION: Award bid in the amount of $86,124.00 to Motor Power &
Equipment for a 2008 Kenworth T300 Dump Truck.
FISCAL EFFECTS: This item is in the FY08 CIP and budget. $90,000 was budgeted for
this truck, which is $3,876.00 less than the price of the truck.
ALTERNATIVES: As suggested by the City Commission.
Respectfully submitted,
