Alston, Water/Sewer Operations Superintendent Chris Kukulski, City Manager SUBJECT: FY08 Backhoe Bids MEETING DATE: October 15, 2007 Consent Agenda BACKGROUND: After reviewing the three bids submitted on the 2008 loader/backhoe, the 2008 Caterpillar Model 430E meets or exceeds our requirements with only one exception. The bids on the John Deere Model 410 J and the Case Model 590 Super M Series 2 had 19 and 15 exceptions respectively and were unable to meet our requirements. The following are some of the major areas that Caterpillar met and John Deere and Case did not. These areas are extremely important in the daily use of the equipment as well as the safety of our crews that were considered in the bid specifications of this backhoe: • Minimum stick lift capacity : Caterpillar – 6,100 lbs. 8 feet no less than 6,080 John Deere – 4,959 lbs. Case – 5,750 lbs. Stick lift capacity is important for lifting trench boxes and steel plates for temporary roadways. • Rear bucket rotation: Caterpillar – 205 degrees 205 degree of rotation John Deere – 190 degrees Case – 200 degrees This bucket rotation is important for digging under curbs and maintaining a straight back of the ditch at deeper depths. • Minimum stick dig force retracted: Caterpillar – 9,700 lbs. 94 9,700 lbs min. stick force John Deere – 8,741 lbs Case – 8,449 lbs. The more force the better for digging in frozen or hard ground and asphalt. With the number of operators within our department, and the amount of use each backhoe gets on a daily basis, we feel the 2008 Caterpillar 430E offers the best piece of equipment based on overall efficiency, durability and safety. RECOMMENDATION: The Commission vote to award the bid for a 2008 Caterpillar 430E to Tractor & Equipment in the amount of $90,871.00. FISCAL EFFECTS: The CIP and FY08 budget allow $99,000 for this backhoe. The bid price of $90,871.00 is $8,129.00 less than allowed. ALTERNATIVES: As suggested by the City Commission.
