GVLT sold approximately 9 acres to the City of Bozeman for the purpose of expanding Bozeman Pond park in April. Once the Master Planning process is complete, GVLT will partner with the City to begin trail design and construction. This is the first acquisition the City has made with Trails, Open Space, and Parks Bond funding. (Pictured: City Parks & Rec Director, Mitch Overton and City Manager, Chris Kukulski get the deed to the land from GVLT Executive Director, Penelope Pierce, Associate Director, Kelly Pohl, and Board President, Whitney Tilt.) • Burke Park/Lindley. GVLT used a machine to improve some drainage issues on trails in Burke Park and Lindley Park and will use volunteers on National Trails Day (Saturday, June 7) to finish the job. • Highland Glen Nature Preserve. We used machines to cut in ½ mile of new trail at HGNP, near the southern (Kagy) entrance. We will use volunteers on National Trails Day to finish the work. • Snowfill. GVLT received a Parkland Improvement Grant to begin constructing ½ mile of new trail loop at Snowfill. Pending additional grant funds, which we should learn about in July, we will begin construction this fall. • Bozeman Creek Connectors. GVLT is actively exploring new trail connections in the Bozeman Creek area, along South Church between Story and Kagy. There are a few possible locations for trail connections that would link Burke Park to the Gallagator trail system. GVLT anticipates a more formal proposal for a connection later this summer. • Landfill Bicycle Park. This winter, GVLT hired consultants with Alpine Bike Parks out of British Columbia, Canada, to help develop a design proposal for using approximately 80 acres of historically unused land at the landfill, adjacent to Snowfill Recreation Area. The proposal will include facilities for all ages and abilities, along with multi-use trails that link into Snwofill. The design proposal is still in development, and GVLT anticipates forwarding a formal proposal later in 2014. 2 GVLT Report to RPAB - June 2014 Trail Volunteer Projects. GVLT is lining up volunteer events throughout the summer, and have already conducted a huge volunteer event for National Service Day (May 21), when the entire 6th grade class from Sacajawea Middle School volunteered. Over 250 students planted trees near Nash Spring Creek and at Sourdough Canyon Trailhead, and spread gravel at Tuckerman Park, Sundance Springs, Sourdough Trail and the Gallagator Extension (pictured below). National Trails Day is Saturday, June 7h, and Gallatin Valley Land Trust is hosting volunteer projects from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Meet at the Lindley Park pavilion for instruction. Leaders will direct volunteers in two work projects: new trail construction at Highland Glen Nature Preserve and family-friendly gravel spreading in Lindley and Burke Parks. Bring your sunscreen, layers for weather, sturdy shoes, hat, gloves and water bottles. Some tools will be provided, but if possible please bring shovels, rakes, and wheelbarrows. All volunteers are welcome to join GVLT for a free picnic lunch, generously provided by Baja Fresh, back at the Lindley Park pavilion at 12:30.
