Bozeman Pond Park Expansion Master Plan
Given the approved budget of $437,000 are there any additions or subtractions you would like to see on the 9
acres of the Bozeman Pond expansion project? The conceptual plan includes a fenced dog park, trails, parking
lot, natural play area, picnic shelter, restroom and outdoor teaching area.
Introduction
The Bozeman Pond Park Expansion proposal was submitted by Gallatin Valley Land Trust for Trails, Open
Space and Parks Bond funds. The proposal was approved by the City Commission in December, 2013, and is
currently moving forward. The project will expand the current park (near the mall) by 9 acres, creating a 24-acre
multi-use flagship park that connects into existing trail networks and provides ample opportunities for recreation
in high-density, fast-growing northwest Bozeman. One of the most fantastic aspects of this project is the
enthusiasm and teamwork shown by a number of community groups that are involved. Collaboration between
the City, Gallatin Valley Land Trust and the non-profit HAVEN will allow for the expansion of important social
services while offering value through the sharing of expenses related to the purchase and development of the
property. Partnerships also include ERA Landmark Real Estate, Run Dog Run, Fish, Wildlife and Parks and the
Optimist Club. Click here to see the detailed proposal. The city and all its partners feel strongly that reaching
out to you, the people who will be using this park, is vital while developing the final master plan. In addition to
this online outlet, the city and stakeholders will be holding two public meetings prior to the official public
hearing. These will be held Tuesdays, May 20th and 27th in the Madison room (upstairs) at City Hall, 121 North
Rouse Avenue from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Thank you for your valuable input on this exciting project. Upon completion, the master plan will be submitted to
the City Recreation and Parks Advisory Board and then ultimately to the Bozeman City Commission for a public
hearing and consideration.

We live right by Bozeman pond and enjoy the natural state of the paths north of the pond. We use the park with
our kids, walking our dogs, riding bikes, boating, fishing, swimming, and walking without the dogs.
• With Ravalli being extended towards a parking area, will there be a four way stop? Fowler has traffic issues
already at Babcock, especially when baseball games are being held. Bozeman needs to ensure people and
cars can safely navigate the intersection at Fowler and Ravalli. Something needs to be done to control the flow
of traffic and many do not obey the 25 or 15mph speed limits.
• Considerations of how Ravalli may become a thoroughfare must be addressed. Ravalli is a street that kids
walk and bike to and from Hyalite elementary. We already have people using Ravalli as a cut through and often
they speed. I’m very concerned the proposed plan will increase traffic and the street will not be safe. Maybe you
need speed bumps (perhaps close to Fowler and by the Hyalite crosswalk) to discourage non-neighborhood
drivers from this as a short cut.
• Keep it wild…. utilize native plants (grasses especially) and go with less lawn. This section of the park doesn’t
need much lawn, it’s available at the other end.
• NW Bozeman needs an ice rink in a park, this is the perfect location. Encourage use of the park in winter with
Nordic ski trails and an ice rink, a welcome addition!
• How about a paddleboard (SUP) and kayak rental hut that is open in the summer? In addition to the rentals,
the city could offer lessons in fly-fishing, climbing and SUP on a regular basis for kids and adults.
• I support an enclosed area for dogs at the park. I have a deaf dog and cannot utilize the dog beach because
he can escape since it is not fully enclosed.
• Older kids have been creating natural forts here as a means of exploration and natural play. You need a space
that encourages older kids (10+) to continue to use their imagination by building and exploring.
• Utilize the addition to offer more summer kids camps in this area of town. Maybe this park needs an indoor
classroom that can be used similar to Lindley Center.
• Yes to a community garden. I can’t imagine how many of the people living in multi-family homes in the area can
garden with what they have. Give them something sustainable to work with.

I hope the proposed project will not do away with the current dog beach area. It's a great place for dogs to swim
and play.

I am strongly in favor of the separate dog park area within this design. It is important to note that this 2-acre
enclosed area does not "turn the park into a dog park." In fact, the dog area will take up less than 10% of the
total area, or 2 acres within the 24 acre park. With dog owners currently accounting for more than 50% of park
visitors, this proportionally seems very modest. And one of the best things about a sanctioned, designated dog
play area is that it makes it easy for dog-owners and non-dog-owners to get along while enjoying this great new
park!

I believe this park balances the needs of non-dog owners and dog owners. We need more places where dogs
can be off-leash and fenced. It seems to me that this park concentrates off leash dog usage into an area where
those dogs won't negatively impact other users. This is a part of town where folks don't have a lot of
opportunities to exercise their dogs. I really think a this is a good use of park space.

+Please maintain as many of the existing trees along Fowler as possible
+Use something other than chain-link for the fenced dog area.
+Provide a connection across the "Y" in the trail at the North-East corner to provide better circulation around
the park.
+The paved section of trail along Fowler should be multi-use and oriented with less abrupt corners / connection
to the south for better flow / seamless connectivity (Paving should extend to south to connection to edge of
existing paved path)

Please consider adding a community garden area. There are many people in that neighborhood who have
really small or no yards and would benefit from access to a garden. Besides being a healthy activity, this would
be a great community builder and give people who might not have a lot of resources, a place to grow some
food. The few other community gardens around town are used at full capacity every year and the town could
use a new one, especially on the West Side. Thanks for considering my comment.

I also live in this area and take my dog to the off-leash area at the Gallatin Regional Park almost daily. I support
an off-leash area for the Bozeman Pond project that is separate from the trails, even though my dog loves to
walk trails. I have friends who are runners and they are frightened of dogs, particularly those off-leash. My only
question is, who will enforce the on-leash/off-leash portions of the park?

I live in this area and frequently walk through the existing park. The open space is great. A larger area would be
even better. The simpler the better also - I think relatively undeveloped open space is better than a lot of

"facilities", fenced-in dog areas, etc. The opportunity to ski here in the winter would also be a great attraction.
Although dog-lovers may like another place to take their dogs, that actually makes it less attractive to people
that want to recreate that don't have dogs. I would probably avoid it if the new area became a dog park.

My family supports this project. The off-leash dog park and encouraged use of such facilities greatly benefits
our community... It's a win-win for dogs, dog-owners, and "non-doggers".

As a frequent runner through this park, I would love to see the trail design for the new expansion loosely follow
the perimeter of the park so as to maximize distance. Our trail designers usually do a great job with this, but I
thought I'd mention also that the trail should weave through the land rather than making a straight shot. Much
more aesthetically pleasing! Keep up the good work!

Great to see this expansion happening. What a privilege it is to have such open spaces in our city.

Happy to see an area dedicated to natural play, as although the park is a wonderful natural resource, few
kiddos go off the trail (or on the trail), which is not unlike our National phenomena with children disconnected
from nature. The existing equipment/rock play area is nicely situated near parking and facilities but does not
invite kids to interact w/ the environs, just the equipment. Adding a space on the other end of the park with
some elevation, terrain challenges and mini trails, tucked along the existing tree line/shrubby area (swapping
location with proposed pavilion site) would provide opportunity to create some fun natural play features and tie
into/invite exploration into existing natural area, rather than a stand alone amongst sod and wood chips. This
opportunity is unlike any other park in the City to date- I hope Bozeman can help lead the way into a more
innovative park experience for our next generation!

Visit Bozeman Pond Park at any time of the day and you'll discover that the primary users of the park are dog
owners recreating with their pets. By creating a fully-fenced 3-acre dog park on the north end of the park
extension, we can provide a sanctioned off-leash area for well-socialized dogs to get the exercise they need
every day. Since Bozeman Pond is the site of the highest number of off-leash citations in the City, we know
there is a demand from area dog owners to have a place for their dogs to play off-leash. By channeling these
dogs into a separate area where they won't impact the enjoyment of the rest of the park for others, we can cut
down on conflicts with other user groups. Within the 3-acre park there will be a separate area for small dogs
and puppies to play, an internal walking trail and there will be ample waste stations in the fenced-in area. The
off-leash park will be visually appealing, with wooden post and rail construction that is in keeping with the
natural aesthetic of the park. And best of all, the funds to build and maintain the fenced-in area are provided by
donations to Run Dog Run - and won't cost the city a penny. The funds are committed and we're ready to start
building. This is a win-win for dog owners and those whose recreation preferences don't include off-leash dogs.

We'd love to see something small for kids to skateboard or bike on like a ramp or small concrete skate/bike park
