Board Selection Committee,
Enclosed you will find my application for the Board of Health. In this cover letter I
would like to express my interest in continuing to serve on the board. I will also provide
you with some of my qualifications. As a practicing scientist in air pollution research, I
look forward to the opportunity to utilize the expertise I have acquired in my professional
career to the community where I live. I believe I bring a balanced yet informed approach
to this position. The relationship between human health and our environment is complex
and not always easily defined. I hope through my service to help educate the public and
raise their awareness about air pollution and how it affects their health. As a board
member and chair of the air quality subcommittee, I hope to continue to work towards the
creation of an air quality district within Gallatin County. The creation of an air quality
district is needed to help fund the purchase, operation and maintenance of a network of
continuous particulate (PM2.5) monitoring stations within the Gallatin Valley and to
support personnel to disseminate this information to the public. Measurements from
these instruments in conjunction with meteorological forecasts available from Montana
Department of Environmental Quality will provide the county health department the
information it needs to issue timely and accurate alerts during periods of degraded air
quality. I look forward to the opportunity to continue to serve on the board.
Below is list of my qualifications.
• B.S. Chemistry, Montana State University, 1978.
• M.S. Physical Chemistry, Montana State University, 1980.
• Ph.D. Analytical Chemistry, Montana State University, 1984.
• Assistant Professor of Chemistry, Franklin and Marshall College, 1984-
1987.
• Research Associate, Montana State University, 1987-1991.
• Associate Research Professor of Chemistry, Montana State University,
1991- present.
• Flight Director and Faculty Advisor for the BOREALIS high altitude
balloon program, Physics Department, Montana State University, 2006—
present.
• Research Interests in atmospheric science and air pollution.
• Member of an international science team 2002, 2003 and 2006 that studied
air pollution in Mexico City.
• Advisor to the FAA and EPA on the chemical compounds emitted from
commercial jet aircraft engines.
Sincerely yours,
Berk Kni hton
