Dr. Houston has focused on maternal and child health; nutrition; infectious diseases; and community-based approaches; with an emphasis on monitoring and evaluation and program design. He was resident in Nepal from 1983-1989, and has worked for a similar period in Zambia. He has worked extensively in both Africa and Asia, and is currently involved with several ongoing projects. This work stimulated partnership with JSI/Ethiopia, and resulted in consultancy to improve community-based programming through JSI project there. Responsibilities included epidemiology and operational research for the Program Against Micronutrient Malnutrition (PAMM), coordinating training programs for international participants, and providing international technical assistance for micronutrient programs, including surveillance and monitoring. Additional duties included supervising M.P.H. students and teaching at both the school of public health and medical school. In addition, part of team that conducted three-year research project on community-based antibiotic treatment of acute respiratory disease in children, developed surveillance tools for oral rehydration intervention and developed training programs for community health worker interventions in diarrheal disease and acute respiratory illness in children.
