HomeMy WebLinkAboutUpdate on Save America's Treasures Grant for downtown Bozeman_7 Commission Memorandum REPORT TO: Honorable Mayor and City Commission FROM: Courtney Kramer, Planner I/ Historic Preservation Officer Wendy Thomas, Director of Community Development SUBJECT: Save America’s Treasures Grant for downtown Bozeman MEETING DATE: May 19, 2014 AGENDA ITEM TYPE: Consent On May 18, 2013, the City Commission approved the Emerson Center for the Arts and Culture use of $140,000 in Save Americas Treasures (SAT) funding currently held by the City of Bozeman. The Emerson and City Staff members have been working to bring the project to fruition and execute a contract to award the grand funds. However, after thoughtful consideration of all of the grant stipulations, the Board of Directors for the Emerson Center voted in April to not accept the grant funding. A letter from their executive director Susan Denson-Guy is attached. The City of Bozeman received $150,000 in SAT grant funding after the 2009 explosion in downtown Bozeman. Ten thousand dollars of that funding is under contract with the Downtown Bozeman Partnership to restore historic streetlights and install them adjacent to the Baxter Hotel on North Willson Avenue. The streetlight restoration project is proceeding on time and on budget. The $10,000 received by the streetlight project constitutes about a third of the project’s funding. Staff will notify the project partners that additional funding may be available. All funds not under grant contract by March 1, 2015 will expire. Other property owners in downtown Bozeman have expressed interest in the grant funds, and City Staff will work with them to explore utilizing the funding.
